As online harms intensify, children are particularly at risk. To better protect them, our government has introduced the Safe Social Media Act, which will make social media services and AI chatbot services safer for children. The bill, if passed, would require social media services and AI chatbot services to identify, mitigate, and address risks of harm on their platforms, and to develop services that are safe by design and put the safety of children first. It would also prevent Canadians under 16 from having accounts on social media services, while providing a process for social media platforms to seek an exemption if they can demonstrate that they have put in place a sufficient set of protections for children. How Big Tech Frames African Audiences As Intellectually Lazy. African social media audiences are not “dumb” - they are being conditioned. When Africans have to engage with western controlled information ecosystems, the engagement is never a fair one. Not in traditional media, and certainly not in digital media. It always follows the same colonial playbook of extraction and social engineering over any kind of meaningful conversation or useful solution. The exploitative relationship between Western-controlled tech giants and Africa's social media audiences is often overlooked, but it shapes almost everything we see or value - and even how we understand ourselves. The low-effort, oversexualized content that has become recognised as the preferred taste of African audiences is not in fact an organic phenomenon. To put it bluntly, Western colonial tech monopolies are actively engineering African social media spaces into cesspits of anti-intellectual slop. Africa must rise to resist this intellectual suppression by building information and communication ecosystems by Africans and for Africans.

French President Macron on social media: We must go further in the regulation of social media in order to preserve the DNA of our democracy. Because at the same time, we are opening Pandora’s box and allowing a lot of hate speech on these platforms and social media. We are too weak and too naive. And we should ask these platforms, first, to completely block bots. We have to be sure there is one single person with one account. If this is an AI system, if this is bought and organized by a big organization, it should simply be forbidden. We need transparency of the algorithm. We are a democracy. We don’t ask for the IP, but we do ask for transparency, which is part of our democracy. We need responsibility from these platforms when they don’t respect our social order, when they don’t respect our rules. And to allow us to do so, we have to go further in order to sue those who clearly decide not to respect our rules and our regulation. And we should block all those who refuse to comply.

The Current Set Of Politicians Are Grooming Their Children To Take Over And The Children Will Be More Deadly. They will be tech savvy, use social media well, be creative, and be sophisticated with the looting. Their parents have been crude, they wouldn't be. There will be a gap as this transition is done. It has already started. We must use that gap to put ourselves in there! Otherwise, it will be bye-bye to Nigeria. We are still paying the price of not participating in politics in 1999. Let's not make the same fatal mistake.

We don’t ask nightclubs to serve orange squash to kids so they can have something to drink. We say no kids in nightclubs. Social media is exactly the same. Social media is not a safe for children. Extreme content is rife, and the safeguards the companies have put in place are complex and woefully ineffective. It’s time to make sure children are protected from adult spaces. The Government should focus on what matters, not banning companies they don’t like.
