The law is clear, SAPS members may not own or operate taxis. There are no exceptions. This is not a small administrative issue. SAPS is expected to police taxi violence, extortion, organised crime and related disputes. A police officer cannot have a financial stake in the very industry they are meant to enforce the law against. I have written to the National Commissioner requesting urgent action. Where these allegations are proven, members must not only be disciplined and dismissed, criminal cases must be opened. They must be arrested, charged and, where the evidence supports it, convicted. Public trust in policing depends on integrity, accountability and consequences. IC

The problem is when you have chosen a faction in SAPS, and want to include us in those factions - we must then even avoid information given to us by public officials because they do not belong in your preferred faction. We are not in any faction of SAPS, no public representative must avoid their constitutional duty of exercising oversight over the Executive using information volunteered to them, in fear of reprisals from cheerleaders of factions in SAPS.

In his initial testimony to the Ad Hoc Committee in Parliament, it was Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi who told us that SAPS and Intelligence is politicised and factionalised, and at the centre of that is the ANC and its elective conferences. Today I put it to Lieutenant General Fani, the supply chain head of SAPS, that he breached the integrity of the South African Police Service and opened the door for a convicted criminal to enter SAPS through a corrupted procurement process. Cape Flats left vulnerable as SAPS K9 Units remain sidelined The DA is fighting the ongoing sidelining of the Cape Town K9 Unit, one of the most effective crime-fighting tools available, even as the gang and drug war on the Cape Flats intensifies. Despite their proven value, specialised sniffer dogs remain idle and handlers are left in limbo due to senior management inaction. In fact, there is currently only one operational narcotics dog serving the entire Cape Town metro. This is an indictment on SAPS’ resource management at a time when gang and drug-related murders plague our communities. The DA, through colleague Nicholas Gotsell MP, has been driving accountability on this matter. Following a DA oversight in February, civil society donated 16 dogs, but only six were deemed fit. They have now been waiting over two months to be deployed for critical training. SAPS leadership has failed to prioritise their placement on courses or to ensure that Roodeplaat’s national K9 facility delivers on its core mandate of training dogs for service, despite millions spent on renovations. Handlers and their dogs are a force multiplier, yet SAPS management continues to deprioritise them while communities bleed. We call on Provincial Commissioner Patekile to urgently deploy the six ready dogs into training and action, and to explain why they have been left idle for so long. SAPS must stop sidelining its most loyal and effective allies, the K9 handlers and their dogs, and show real commitment to intelligence-led, prosecution-driven policing in gang and drug hotspots. We were looking for a Technical Support Services Head, qualified in mechatronics, i.e. both mechanical & electronic engineering. For our covert operations. 2. Section 46 of the SAPS Act prohibits SAPS members from owning minibus taxis, while SAPS National Instruction 18 of 2019 further prohibits any direct or indirect involvement in the taxi industry. We followed every process. We submitted the evidence. We sent numerous follow-up emails. The only responses received were acknowledgements that the matter was "being looked into." Now, after months, maybe even years of inaction, the Provincial Commissioner wants South Africans to believe he knew nothing. He knew. SAPS knew. More than 20 members have since been criminally charged, more than 10 have resigned and additional reports continue to emerge. The facts are clear. The paper trail exists. The evidence was provided. Lieutenant-General Patekile lied. South Africans deserve honest leadership, accountability, and a police service that enforces the law equally not one that ignores it until exposed. [HAPPENING TODAY] The case against suspended SAPS Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and other accused in the controversial SAPS/Medicare 24 contract has been postponed to August 28. The state says that as a result of Medicare 24 boss Vusimusi "Cat" Matlala's case being separated from these accused means there needs to be amendments to the charges sheet. The State says that as a result of Matlala's proceedings yesterday, where he pleaded guilty to all charges, agreed to turn state witness and expose other high profile SAPS officials, there might also be additional accused added, that is why it has not finalized the charge sheet. The SA Police Service 🇿🇦 says it has “taken note of a video depicting alleged preferential treatment and favouritism given to an accused person who is currently in police custody.l “At the time of the incident, the accused who is currently in police custody, is seen being allowed physical contact with his spouse which is not allowed. SAPS management is investigating this incident and internal departmental processes are underway against the members concerned. The SAPS will also establish if the members searched the contents of the bag of the spouse to ensure that the content may not be used to facilitate an escape or endanger the lives of others…”
