This morning, NCCM CEO Stephen Brown spoke on Parliament Hill with community partners to support Senator Peter Harder's Bill S-218, which would put guardrails around how federal politicians can use the Notwithstanding Clause to shield their legislation from legal challenges. Unfortunately, in recent years, various leaders around Canada have attempted to use the NWC as a loophole and to attack our most fundamental freedoms. This subverts the democratic system of political and legal accountability at the heart of our democracy. It undercuts Canada's protection of our fundamental rights. Bill S-218 would set an important precendent that protects against this abuse of the NWC and the erosion of our democracy. It comes as Canada is in desperate need for accountability on the usage of the NWC. We need change today.
