🚨LANDFALL: For only the 5TH time in recorded history and the first since 1992, a cyclone has made landfall over the island of Sri Lanka in the month of November. Peaking so far at 40 mph (65 kph) and 1,001 mbar, Tropical Storm Ditwah is causing disastrous landslides and raging flash floods today as he moves across Sri Lanka, despite his very weak wind speeds. At least 47 casualties have sadly been reported, with another 25+ missing. Simultaneously, just ~1,400 miles (2,250 km) to Ditwah’s east, Tropical Depression Senyar continues to flood Sumatra, Indonesia as well as Malaysia.

The tropical disturbance is currently located over Mexico and will gradually move toward South Texas. According to the NHC/NOAA, the chance that it will organize into a tropical cyclone remains low, around 30%. Regardless of whether a tropical cyclone actually forms, the system may bring intense showers and thunderstorms along the western and central Gulf Coast. Over the next four days, widespread rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches are expected from the Texas coast into Louisiana, with locally higher amounts possible. A developing early-season Nor'easter will bring a prolonged period of strong winds, coastal flooding, and rain from New York City to Boston this Friday into the weekend! A developing coastal storm is forecast to track up the Eastern Seaboard and stall off the Northeast coast, delivering a prolonged period of wet and windy weather from Friday through Sunday. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph will be possible along the coast, particularly from the New York City area up through Boston. Even stronger wind gusts exceeding 40 mph are possible over Cape Cod and the islands! The storm will also generate significant marine hazards, starting with a high risk of rip currents and building surf ahead of the system through the middle of the week. By Friday and Saturday, persistent northeast winds combined with high astronomical tides from a full moon will pile water along the shoreline. This combination will likely result in multiple cycles of minor coastal flooding and significant beach erosion, with eastern-facing beaches at the greatest risk. While exact rainfall totals will depend on how close the center of the storm tracks to the coast, the heaviest rain is currently favored over eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and eastern Long Island. These areas could see up to 3-5 inches of rain through Saturday night, though widespread freshwater flooding is not currently a major concern.

This sight was worth getting out of bed early. Just over four years ago, Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) rose before dawn to the delight of northern sky enthusiasts awake that early. Up before sunrise on July 8th, the featured photographer was able to capture in dramatic fashion one of the few comets visible to the unaided eye this century, an inner-Solar System intruder that has become known as the Great Comet of 2020. The resulting video detailed Comet NEOWISE from Italy rising over the Adriatic Sea. The featured time-lapse video combines over 240 images taken over 30 minutes. The comet was seen rising through a foreground of bright and undulating noctilucent clouds, and before a background of distant stars. Comet NEOWISE remained unexpectedly bright for over a month, with its ion and dust tails found to emanate from a nucleus spanning about five kilometers across. The upcoming storm system is eerily reminiscent of March of 1995. A snow-moving occluded front strengthened by a 130-knot plus westerly jet stream flowing across the Pacific will be centered over the Central Coast tonight into Friday. This condition will create an Atmospheric River (AR) that will produce moderate gale-force to fresh gale-force (32 to 46 mph with gusts to 55 mph) southerly winds and continuous moderate to heavy rain over a 24-hour period. NOAA’s HRRR (High Resolution Rapid Refresh) model indicates between 3 and 5 inches of rain for most of the coastal and inland valleys; however, orographic enhancement due to the southerly gales will produce between 5 and 10 increase of rain along many of the southerly facing slopes, such as portions of the Cuesta Grade. The Santa Lucia Mountains above Morro Bay, Cayucas, Cambria, San Simeon, and Big Sur could see over 15 inches of rainfall. Scattered rain showers will develop on Saturday, ending on Sunday into Monday. Another storm system is forecast to produce additional rain on Tuesday into Wednesday. At this time, between 2 and 4 inches.
