This little girl told her mom that she wishes she weren’t black and that she was white. The mother tells her that she is beautiful and that God made her the way she is for a reason. But she questions her on why she would think that. The mother is second guessing herself now. She says “As a mother raising three girls, this is the first time I've encountered something like this, and hearing it from my 5-year-old truly stopped me in my tracks. Despite believing that I built her up to be strong and to love herself and who she is, I stand here feeling stuck and saddened, questioning where I may have gone wrong. Children begin forming ideas about identity, beauty, and belonging at a very young age…..” I think she is a beautiful young girl. I hate to say it but she is probably being teased or someone is saying some very mean things to her. And I think the mother is doing a fine job and is trying her best.
