"It's not a game it's a toy" What the fuck does he think games are? Also blud clearly missed the Newgrounds era of the web. Hell, he missed how addicted everyone was to Farmville to the point a lady killed her baby over it.

To my understanding they arent trying to make a game. They are showing capability and wanting engagement. Im using godot for my hobby project still working on the core systems. Havent touched threejs.

I think Phil is making a genuine point but there’s a couple of things imho that invalidate it: - You can deliver a three.js to Steam already - Regardless, Steam is not a primary discovery layer (bar their sales calendar). Social, YouTube, Twitch etc is. Those -> Wishlist. - The aim should be to make a game that’s fun. It doesn’t matter if we use Three.JS, Unity, rawdog PHP. Ok maybe not that, but the library and engine are not the game. And there are benefits too, both as a learner and eventually someone publishing a game - You’ll learn low level reasons why things don’t feel nice. For example, your movement code feels janky. Unreal will trick you into thinking your game is fun, but your prefab third person character feels out of place when others playtest. No-engine forces you to learn things that allow you to fine tune - Your game is browser native. Unless your game is VRAM heavy or needs fine grained GPU control, it’s a great thing. You can ship a game demo & someone can play it without installing it on Steam. - Iteration speed and prototyping is huge. Engine MCPs are gonna take a while to catch up. I’d not have been able to build, get playtested by others and personally kill off multiple game ideas in the past 2 months with Unity. Validation is huge with games! Just my brain dump on the topic. I need to make a blog post now I guess 😊

It's funny because he's not wrong really... distribution is really the missing piece for browser games. I called "the rise of browser games" waaaaayyyy to early in 2023 ( ). What you're right about though is... change is actually in the air this time. It's truly amazing the work you've been doing in three.js - a real gift to the world.

Sorry but this is stupid argument there is loads of game that start as browser games, for example amazing Cookie Cliker

He does have a point on the platform issue. Have you thought about how this could be addressed? Having all the code available in the browser always seemed problematic, but now basically anything can be reverse-engineered with enough motivation so maybe this isn't an issue. Maybe the value is in the platform itself (social features, achievements, discoverability) rather than the IP?

Good save 😏 I think @threejs and AI is going to open up the browser to be a platform where more intricate and elaborate games can - and will be - played. Seeing what @mattshumer_ (and many others) does with his loops, and of course what we are doing ourselves hopefully accelerates that 🙌

”People don’t look for games in their browser” is the weirdest cope ever. If the game is good, wrap it in an app. The real problem is more that these games probably aren’t all that playable, yet.

hes conflating points. no one cares what you use to make games three.js is fine use whatever. hes right about the distribution problem. but he doesnt sound like he knows what hes talking about tbh if he conflates those things nvm h8ters gonna h8

Man. Imagine being so mindbroken by corporations you think a game has to be on Steam or app stores. The funny thing is, 20 years ago, this guy would have been posting "digital games will never work, you need to sell them in brick and mortar stores".

You can ship browser based games to many platforms, to make it an app use TVA or wrap using Capacitor. You can make it an executable for mac, windows, linux with Electron and ship on steam.

The ‘amazing’ power of Ai…and they just clone shit? Where’s the advancements in gaming with all this supposed new power? That’s like learning art but only copying shit you see on instagram not making anything new

He is right until some point, that people searching for games on marketplaces. But he's wrong that, behaviors change over time. Before Steam there were only Cartridges and disks. Before Appstore there is only Steam. Now this is the time for Web games to rise. Look at Poki traffic. multiple millions. It all started recently. New technology opens up new opportunities for new market.

Vampire survivor was made using Phaser, a lot of other successful games where made using JS / browser game engines. If your message is do a great game instead of a toy, I mean, why not both ? Also some ppl do indeed play in their browsers, you can't always install steam.

What's to stop you very quickly making a game prototype with AI and three.js. Getting it in front of an audience and then, if they like it, build out a full app for steam? Given how quick people are doing this work, seems like a sensible path. Almost no time wasted prototyping.
