Arvind Kejriwal has done it again. In his eagerness to spread misinformation, he claimed that E20 is both a petrol blend and a diesel blend. It isn’t. E20 refers exclusively to petrol blended with 20% ethanol. Diesel has no such E20 blend. Anyone claiming otherwise is either astonishingly ignorant or deliberately misleading people. Now to the facts that propaganda conveniently ignores: 1. The “massive mileage loss” claim is false. There is no scientific evidence, extensive vehicle testing or real-world data supporting the claim that E20 causes a drastic drop in mileage. 2. Why ethanol is used Ethanol has several advantages: • Higher octane rating (~108.5 vs petrol’s ~84.4) • Better combustion • Reduced hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate emissions • Lower lifecycle carbon emissions by around 40% • Better anti-knock performance • Lower intake temperatures due to its higher heat of vaporization 3. Better performance, cleaner fuel Vehicles designed for E20 benefit from: • Better acceleration and pickup • Improved ride quality • Superior anti-knock characteristics • Cleaner combustion • Negligible particulate emissions 4. What about mileage? Yes, ethanol has a lower calorific value than petrol. But modern engines are calibrated to take advantage of ethanol’s high octane rating, improving thermal efficiency and offsetting much of the potential loss. The result? • E10-designed vehicles calibrated for E20 typically see only about 1–2% reduction in fuel economy. • Others may experience around 3–6%, depending on engine design. That is a far cry from the alarmist claims being circulated. 5. Mileage depends on much more than fuel Fuel economy is influenced by: • Driving habits • Tyre pressure • Wheel alignment • Traffic conditions • Air-conditioning usage • Engine maintenance • Air filter condition • Proper gear selection In day-to-day driving, these factors often have a much greater impact than the marginal difference attributable to E20. 6. E20 wasn’t introduced overnight The transition followed extensive testing with SIAM and leading automobile manufacturers. Manufacturers have produced E20-compatible vehicles for years, with dedicated E20-compliant models rolling out from April 2023. 7. Real-world evidence matters E19/E20 petrol has been used across India for over 2½ years. During this period: • More than 20 crore two-wheelers • More than 3 crore petrol cars have operated on these fuels without any widespread reports of engine failures or abnormal mileage loss attributable to E20. Manufacturers have continued to honour warranties. 8. Automobile manufacturers have spoken Toyota Kirloskar says ethanol is a globally proven high-performance fuel and India’s transition followed rigorous international testing. Maruti Suzuki confirms there is no field evidence of corrosion, abnormal wear or reduced component life due to E20. It notes that while mileage may reduce by about 3–3.5% because of ethanol’s lower calorific value, the difference is offset by better acceleration, improved anti-knock performance and significantly lower emissions. Hero MotoCorp says its nationwide service data shows no evidence of increased damage or wear and tear in vehicles running on E20. The bottom line: The claim that E20 causes a drastic reduction in mileage simply does not stand up to science, engineering or real-world experience. And here’s the obvious question: are people really expected to believe that millions of motorists have been meticulously recording and remembering the exact mileage their vehicles delivered over two-and-a-half years ago, only to suddenly conclude that today’s fuel economy is because of E20? India’s transition to E20 is based on science, extensive testing and environmental responsibility—not WhatsApp forwards and political misinformation. Before lecturing the country on fuel policy, Arvind Kejriwal should at least learn the difference between petrol and diesel.

E20 fuel began to be supplied fully from October–November 2025, and from 1 April 2026 the government made it mandatory for private players and all oil companies to sell only E20. Since the notification, some people have raised psychological concerns, often posting on social media without evidence. At our own petrol pumps, none of the customers’ vehicles has shown any problems with E20. Those posting online also have no proof that E20 damages engines. Yes, three institutions produced reports on the long-term effects of E20, suggesting that older vehicles might experience problems, particularly on rubber parts. But there is no such proof of damage as of now." (04.07)

#WATCH | Delhi: On ethanol, Vikram Gulati, Country Head and Executive Vice President (Corporate Affairs and Governance) of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, says, "...I think there is a lot of misunderstanding about the fuel. For example, if you look at it from the automotive sector, there is a lot of myth that if you use E20 blended fuel, vehicles will get damaged. It's a myth. It doesn't happen this way. There's a lot of myth about the amount of mileage loss or the fuel efficiency loss. Yes, there is some fuel efficiency loss, no doubt. But it is not so big as it is being made out to be...E85 and E100, that is, 85% ethanol and 100 % ethanol, are not meant for regular cars. It is meant for a different type of technology, which is called a flex fuel vehicle. This vehicle can take any mix of ethanol. So people need not worry. E20 is the standard fuel that will be available, and it is compatible with old vehicles and new vehicles. All vehicles sold after 1st of April 2023 are fully materially compliant with E20. And people need to be reassured that in 2021, before we went into E20, there was a very detailed scientific study done by the leading automobile testing agency in the country, which is ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India). It clearly established that the possible damage to cars and two wheelers which are old is not there. It's very insignificant. And it also established that the fuel efficiency loss is to the extent of 2 to 4 per cent, not significant." On ethanol, he says, "As per the latest statistics from the government, the program so far has helped save 1.9 trillion rupees. Out of that, 1,60,000 crores has gone to farmers. So in the case of India, it's not only helped us to in some way mitigate the energy crisis, but it's also helped us to help the farmers...The reason why not just India, but many other countries are doing it is for energy security, for the agrarian economy, as well as for fighting climate change and environmental purposes."

THE E20 DEBATE: FACTS VS HYPOCRISY. HERE'S AN UNDENIABLE FACT: The E20 programme did not begin under the Modi government. Ethanol blending was approved years earlier, during the UPA. The difference is in execution. Blending remained stuck at roughly 1–1.5% for years before accelerating significantly under the NDA. So, let's first get the politics out of the way. If ethanol blending was acceptable in principle then, why is it suddenly portrayed as anti-people now? Now, let's look at the arguments being presented by critics: CRITICS ARGUMENT 1: E20 FUEL IS BEING PUSHED BY NDA TO KEEP SUGAR CANE FARMERS HAPPY. There's no doubt Ethanol is creating an additional income stream for sugarcane farmers. But governments have always handed out subsidies or incentives to farmers. + MSP exists for 23 crops. Sugar cane farmers get SAP or State Advised Price. + Fertiliser subsidies. + Cheap or free electricity. + Irrigation subsidies. + Procurement policies. If these benefits to farmers are accepted as legitimate public policy, why is E20 policy being targeted in isolation for market distortion? CRITICS ARGUMENT 2: ETHANOL PRODUCTION IS WATER CONSUMING. Yes, sugarcane consumes a great deal of water. But so do + Paddy cultivators. Just look at the tumbling water tables in Punjab, Haryana. + AI and data centers. + Semiconductor manufacturing. + Steel and cement production. The question is not whether something uses water, but whether the benefits justify the costs. Again why are critics holding E20 alone to a test that they don't set for others? CRITICS ARGUMENT 3: THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD NOT MAKE E20 MANDATORY. LEAVE IT TO CHOICE. We're in a democracy and choice matters. But governments routinely make decisions that we, the people have no choice but to accept. + Taxation rates + Emission norms. + Fuel quality standards. + Safety regulations. + Identity Proof. These are often choices imposed to achieve broader national goals. Shouldn't E20 should be judged in the same way? Here's how E20 usage serves NATIONAL INTEREST: + India imports 85–90% of its crude oil. E20 seeks to address that by replacing up to 20% of petrol volume with domestically produced ethanol, helping diversify the fuel mix and reducing import costs. + With E20 NDA estimates saving Rs 1 lakh crore in foreign-exchange. Tehseen Poonawalla is absolutely right & must be supported by everyone univocally on this issue. If you don’t support him, you risk your valuable vehicles which are at risk now. The forced E20 ethanol blending policy has become a textbook case of conflict of interest, lack of transparency, and disregard for the common citizen. No E20 related damage was found. If E20 genuinely damaged rubber hoses, fuel lines or engines, this would have shown up as a wave of warranty claims and complaints. That wave never happened. But what they don't understand is that the climate movement is doing the exact opposite of what these well-meaning activists want to accomplish. The movement vilifies reliable energy—the single biggest driver of getting people out of poverty. Over the past several decades, we’ve spent trillions on an energy transition away from fossil fuels. The result? We’ve made our energy system less reliable and more expensive. Western countries have also practiced climate colonialism by preventing Africa from developing with natural gas, coal, and oil. (This goes against everything climate activists claim to stand for!) This is the most morally inverted movement ever. Right now, a billion people don't have access to reliable energy. That means women are spending their entire day figuring out how to get fuel to cook their food. Children in these settings are not going to school, they’re spending hours collecting wood or walking to get water. All of that is a symptom of energy poverty. This is when climate activists will say “but the planet is burning!” Just no. The planet is not burning. Yes, we've added CO2 to the atmosphere and seen about ~1°C of warming over 150 years. But 95% of CO2 is naturally occurring and historically, warming periods are when humans flourish. The Medieval Warm Period (900–1300 AD) is a great example. It was 0.7-1°C warmer and populations boomed. They then collapsed during the Little Ice Age. Takeaway the climate hysteria and objectively you would choose to live during a warming period over a cooling period.
