CO2 only absorbs around three distinct wavelengths of infrared, 2.7, 4.3, and 15 microns. CO2 ignores all other radiation. Which means it's transparent during the day (saturated by incoming solar radiation) and blocks no more thana about 8% of blackbody radiation at night. CO2 was never a driver of global temps.

Fittingly, Greta Thunberg's father was named after him, though there's no direct family link. Within a decade though, fellow Swede Knut Ångström put that idea to the test. In 1900-1901, he demonstrated experimentally that adding more CO2 had almost no additional effect on infrared absorption. His findings, published in Annalen der Physik, showed that the gas was already nearly saturated, meaning more of it wouldn't trap much extra heat. Ångström concluded that Arrhenius had overestimated CO2's influence by mixing its effects with those of water vapor, the far stronger greenhouse gas.
