He told a room of Jewish supporters in Michigan last week that he could not answer the question without first unpacking whether Israel is Jewish by faith, by power, or by majority. My grandmother Hela did not need to work through it. She was put on a plane out of Baghdad because in June 1941 a mob killed 180 Jews in two days, and the message to a community that had lived there for 2,600 years was clear.
