Mel Brooks on the letters he received from fans who thought 'Spaceballs' (1987) was funnier than 'Star Wars' (1977): "'Spaceballs' (1987) went on to become one of the biggest hits in the Mel Brooks cinematic universe. I think I’ve autographed more 'Spaceballs' posters than for any other Mel Brooks film. I’ve even gotten some letters from young fans that saw 'Spaceballs' before they saw 'Star Wars' (1977). They would often ask me why 'Star Wars' wasn’t so funny." (Mel Brooks, 'Mel Brooks on the Making of Spaceballs', Mel Brooks, Literary Hub, 2021)

Mel Brooks produced David Lynch's The Elephant Man (1980). When Brooks showed a cut to Paramount Execs, they wanted some changes. Brooks refused, saying, 'We screened the film to bring you up to date... Do not misconstrue this as our soliciting the input of raging primitives.'

Mel Brooks is officially 100 years old as of today. 100 candles. What an achievement. Brooks’ filmography is as rich as anyone’s in the history of film & I genuinely believe part of the reason he’s still alive at 100 is because of his constant laughter. Laughter keeps you young. Hell, Cinema keeps you young. And Cinema is Mel Brooks. 🎂
