The International Space Station (ISS) typically maintains a Russian Soyuz spacecraft docked as a lifeboat for crew members. This has been part of a long-standing agreement between NASA and Roscosmos, ensuring that all ISS crew have a means of evacuation in case of an emergency, such as a critical station failure or medical issue requiring immediate return. Wilmore and Williams arrived at the ISS in June 2024 on Boeing’s Starliner, which was intended to bring them back after a short test mission. When Starliner encountered helium leaks and thruster issues, NASA deemed it too risky for a crewed return, and it came back empty in September 2024. At that point, the astronauts were integrated into the ISS crew, extending their stay. While SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission, launched on September 28, 2024, with two empty seats specifically for them, provided their eventual ride home in March 2025, the Soyuz could have been used earlier if an urgent need arose.
