did you see that youtube video of that one guy that's making a game engine based on SDFs from scratch

That gun doesn’t seem to be an SDF. I see flat polys on its barrel.

Yeah. It's a triangle mesh rendered on to the same G-buffer. No visual polish on day 1. Trying to figure out the gameplay first. Then polish and art design.

Wasn’t thinking visual polish as much as I was thinking: “Oh you’re mixing multiple rendering technologies together” I would ditch triangle rasterization entirely.

Yeah. I will likely make it similar to Teardown, but do SDF sphere trace inside the local volumes instead of voxel DDA. I did already a prototype for rendering 1 million SDF volumes (1GB each) long time ago (runs at 60 fps on Intel iGPU):

these guys @Team17 have a nice IP for this tech🪱

@Team17 The tech is similar to Claybook SDF tech, which I presented at GDC 2018 (8 years ago):

everything being slightly rounded is so visually pleasing

the floor getting worked over by a furious melon baller is so satisfying

Still waiting for an SDF engine!

Sans Domicile Fixe destruction ? Sounds racist

looks good

kind of reminds me of reflex arena

I see parts of the gun change size by a line or so. Maybe it's just the edge conflicting with the lighting or something. Looks good though.

Need some shiny objects and laser pistols with bouncy laser beams.

SDF is awesome, so much cool stuff you can do with it. I just used it for water rendering, but you can like do an entire engine with it) Destruction with SDF is a great idea.

Is that the famous architectural piece?

Go play Red Faction on Ps2 for inspiration on where to take this. It was released 25 years ago

looks really good

Very cool, I'd probably create a big cube / sphere and have different gun sizes to do some sculpting

Working title: Hole Thing

Didn't you already develop entire game around SDF destruction? Or is this about some different tech compared to claybook?

Please make the character be worms 😄

@XorDev Classic SDF effects, they lend themselves to interesting game mechanics 🙂

We need a new Tf2

Very cool! Different from the normal breaking/crumbling type destruction. How are you going to texture this tho?

Now go into the hole and ill be impress otherwise its just visual

interesting

When you play jenga, you anticipate the fall, and if it doesn't happen, you are disappointed.

this is sick. what's the goal here? also what are you using to build this? is it possible to implement physics into a SDF destruction or would that require far more than the scope of this project? For instance, if you destroy the four pillars of the platform rig, does it fall?
