Egypt's Football Federation "categorically rejected" anything tied to "supporting homosexuality." Iran called it "an irrational move" and filed an official complaint. Turkey has banned Pride marches since 2015. Egypt ranks in one of the lowest spots on the LGBTQ equality indexes. And as for Iran, same-sex conduct carries a death penalty. Yet the reaction from Western queer activists to actual, real-time oppression? Silence. Compare that to the noise around Israel, the only country in the Middle East where LGBTQ people are legally protected and same-sex marriages are recognized, and the only country in the region where a gay cruise would be welcomed. Calling the only country in the region that protects LGBTQ people “pinkwashing,” while ignoring regimes that persecute or kill them, is not solidarity. It's hypocrisy.
