Fukuyama’s End of History is dead. He claimed liberal democracy had won permanently after the Cold War, the final form of government with no serious rivals left. Fast forward and 74% of humanity now lives under autocracy, and democracy levels for the average person are back to 1978. More countries are dictatorships than democracies. Free speech is collapsing and trust is gone. The post-Cold War wave peaked around 2000 and has been running in reverse for 20 years. Anyone still selling the inevitable triumph of liberal democracy is selling a corpse.
