Second round on the ring light. It now has a hole in the middle 😉.

Nice! Looks just like the ones Youtubers use. ;)

Yes. As I am looking at the lighting effect of it. It gives a soft shadow relatively similar to a disc of equal radius, but the emissive area is much smaller, so with LEDs a large ring is way cheaper to manufacture than a full panel.

Booof, It looks amazing! 😍😍 One day I would like to make a new version of my engine as spectacular as this one. 💪

If I can do it, you can do it.

How do you even figure out how to do this analytically?

I didn’t start with a formal derivation of the sampling and probability equations. Instead I modified well-known disc sampling formulas, I plotted the results to verify it worked as I expected, and that was good enough for me.

I always found this weird how in Octane render, one of the most "famous" for being an "unbiased" renderer, had issues recreating this ring light effect when I quite literally modeled out a ring light to recreate this effect. I had to instead force this effect thru a GOBO instead.

The term unbiased used in a paper to describe a Monte Carlo estimator is legitimate. However, “unbiased” used to describe a whole renderer is mostly marketing BS, you know that, right?
