Tyler Oliveira's documentary on the Hasidic Jewish community in New Jersey challenges (by implication) the established narrative that Whites in Europe were responsible for keeping Jews out of society due to their "xenophobia" and "bigotry". On the contrary, what we see in Lakewood, New Jersey, is a standard pattern of Jewish behavior inside Western societies: a tribal insularity that prioritizes the in-group interests of Jews over integration with the broader society. Hasidic communities in Lakewood maintain a high degree of ingroup preference, exclusion of outsiders, xenophobia towards "strangers," and strict adherence to "irrational" religious laws derived from the Talmud and other texts. This intolerant behavior includes endogamy (marrying within the group), Yiddish as a primary language in social life, separate education systems, and business dealing that exclude outsiders, and endemic networking in favor of Jewish groups. The Jewish communities in medieval and early modern Europe exhibited very similar traits. This context of Jewish behavior is necessary to understand European "discriminatory actions," such as expulsions from England in 1290 and Spain in 1492, as well as pogroms in Russia during the 19th century. These actions by Europeans are framed today as irrational or xenophobic hatred driven by Christian exclusion and closed-minded theology. 🇺🇸 Before extending my wishes for a blessed Christmas to all, a few reflections on the growing divide between the European Union and the United States. The topic was discussed by a Dutch news outlet with a pro-EU perspective (video). But it warrants some deeper reflection. The European Union is quick to attribute its problems to external forces: to Putin, to Trump, to “foreign disinformation.” Yet anyone willing to look honestly will see that much of what is going wrong in Europe today is the direct result of choices made by the EU itself—structural, ideological, and institutional. As early as 2005, citizens in the Netherlands and France drew a clear line. They voted against the European Constitution. That signal was not respected. Instead, largely the same substance was introduced through a different route via the Lisbon Treaty. Legally permissible, perhaps—but politically and democratically deeply problematic. It marked the beginning of a profound breach of trust between European citizens and European institutions. In 2016, this pattern repeated itself. The Dutch electorate voted “no” to the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement. Once again, the outcome was set aside through an additional declaration. The solemn promise that Ukraine would never become an EU member and that military involvement was excluded later proved to be of little value. The message was clear: democratic input is accepted only when it aligns with the preferred course. This points to a deeper issue: the EU’s democratic deficit. The European Commission is not directly elected, yet it holds the exclusive right of legislative initiative. The European Parliament cannot introduce legislation on its own. National parliaments often receive EU proposals late in the process and have limited ability to amend or reject them. Power continues to concentrate at a level increasingly insulated from direct democratic accountability. This shift is reinforced by the European Court of Justice. EU law effectively takes precedence over national law, including constitutional law. Through ever-expanding interpretations of the treaties, competencies steadily migrate toward Brussels without an explicit democratic mandate. Member states have few meaningful tools to reverse this trend. Economically, the EU has made fundamental errors as well. The introduction of the euro brought together economies with vastly different levels of productivity, debt, and fiscal discipline. The policies of the European Central Bank cannot suit all member states simultaneously. The result has been inflation, growing wealth inequality, and declining purchasing power—particularly in fiscally responsible countries. National governments bear the consequences, yet possess little monetary sovereignty. On top of this, the EU has imposed an energy transition insufficiently grounded in economic reality or global competition. High energy costs and excessive regulation have eroded the competitiveness of European industry. Investment is leaving, production is relocating, and the cost of living is becoming unaffordable for a growing share of the population. The same pattern appears in migration and border policy. The issue is not only scale and lack of control, but also cultural impact. Large-scale immigration without effective integration undermines social cohesion. European culture—shaped by history, traditions, values, and shared norms—is under pressure. Culture is not secondary. *Politics is downstream from culture.* When the cultural foundation erodes, political instability inevitably follows. This is reflected in tensions around security, education, housing, healthcare, and the loss of a shared societal framework. At the same time, the EU continues to layer regulation upon regulation. Small and medium-sized enterprises—the backbone of the European economy—are increasingly burdened by complex, costly, and often ideologically driven obligations. Entrepreneurship gives way to bureaucratic survival. Agriculture faces a similar top-down approach. Farmers are confronted with far-reaching measures imposed without realistic alternatives or sufficient public support. Food security is treated as an afterthought, even though the Covid crisis demonstrated just how vulnerable Europe has become. Strategic autonomy begins with energy *and* food. Fundamental freedoms are also under pressure. Under the banner of combating disinformation, authorities increasingly seek to define what may and may not be said, even as it becomes clear in hindsight that official EU positions on Covid, climate policy, and geopolitics were often incomplete or incorrect. At the same time, citizens’ privacy is curtailed in the name of security, while the European Commission itself operates with striking opacity. Trust erodes when those who govern fail to lead by example. Public funds are also used to finance NGOs that influence or implement policies the EU itself cannot formally pursue. This circumvents democratic oversight and weakens accountability. In foreign policy, the EU is evolving into a geopolitical actor without a clear democratic mandate. Sanctions, arms deliveries, and strategic decisions with far-reaching consequences are made with little public debate. The relationship between EU defense initiatives, NATO, and national armed forces is increasingly unclear. For decades, the EU has presented itself as a project of peace and prosperity. Yet in recent years, diplomacy in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has largely been replaced by escalation and sanctions. These sanctions have primarily harmed European citizens through reduced purchasing power and economic security, while serious peace initiatives have been ignored—or even actively undermined. The fundamental problem of the European Union is not external, but internal: a system that concentrates ever more power, provides ever less accountability, and grows ever more distant from the citizens it claims to represent. The Tower of Babel is wobbling. Rather than assigning blame elsewhere, European leaders must look in the mirror, accept responsibility, and return to first principles: economic cooperation through the internal market, respect for national democracies, cultural sovereignty, and a realistic, diplomatic foreign policy—including support for genuine peace negotiations. Ahmad Shahidov exposed India’s human rights violations in Kashmir at OSCE Vienna meeting On May 6, a two-day conference titled “Protecting Civil Society: The Role of Human Rights Defenders and the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly” continued its work in Vienna, organized by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the Finnish OSCE Chairmanship. The event brought together ambassadors, diplomats, and official representatives from 57 countries to discuss the protection of civil society within the OSCE region, the work of human rights defenders, the protection of freedom of peaceful assembly, and the current challenges in these areas. Ahmad Shahidov, head of the Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights and a human rights defender, delivered a speech during the panel discussion. In his address, Shahidov highlighted increasing pressure on human rights defenders by India in South Asia, mass human rights violations in the Kashmir region, war crimes trials underway in Baku, and the growing nuclear threat in the region, warning that such escalation poses a direct risk to European and global security. At the start of his remarks, Shahidov responded to a statement made by an Armenian colleague, stressing that human rights issues should not be politicized or manipulated. He stated that the Armenian nationals currently on trial in Baku are being prosecuted for committing war crimes and financing terrorism. Shahidov emphasized that he personally attended those court hearings, where Araik Harutyunyan, Ruben Vardanyan, and others made confessions confirming their crimes. He invited international colleagues to attend these trials and see the facts for themselves. Further in his speech, Shahidov drew attention to the human rights abuses in #Kashmir, documented by Amnesty International and UN reports. Thanks to the solidarity of thousands of antifascist citizens, I stand in front of you today as a free woman. Hungary’s presidency of the Council of the European Union is highly inappropriate. United Europe was born, on the ashes of the defeat of nazifascism, as a project of international cooperation. It is a bitter paradox to have a presidency led by someone whose goal is to dismantle the EU in the name of nationalism. Hungary, under Viktor Orban, has become an illiberal and oligarchic regime, an authoritarian ethnic state. Some even call it a “modern tyranny.” What is sure is that the rule of law and media freedoms are not guaranteed. Dissent is criminalised, civil society repressed. While loyal oligarchs have grown rich, social and regional inequalities have become worse. The rights of minorities are violated and racism has become mainstream. The EU is far from being perfect: neoliberal policies, social inequalities, inacceptable double standards in foreign policy, subordination to U.S. influence… But none of this concerns Orban. His real targets are minorities, migrants, social justice, freedom of expression, and the rule of law. He fuels resentment among the Hungarian people against a so-called "degenerate Europe" to create an external enemy and consolidate his power. Orban has strong ties with the worst far-right forces, both in Europe and internationally. This new, dangerous form of fascism represents the authoritarian variant of today’s global capitalism. They are fraudulent enemies of the working class and of friendship among peoples, a threat to all those who aspire to live in freedom. Finally, I want to express my full solidarity with Maja T., the German antifascist and non-binary activist, who was extradited from Germany and is now detained in Hungary. We’re governed by psychopaths who operate with cold pragmatism, ruthless, detached and driven less by values than by outcomes. To them, people become abstractions, reduced to numbers on a balance sheet. Money is the primary metric and when wealth no longer satisfies, influence and control take its place. Take Ukraine, It is devastated, heavily dependent on external funding, even to pay basic salaries. Yet at the same time, some of its wealthiest elites, many of whom built fortunes through deals that tied the country’s assets to powerful foreign financial and corporate interests like black Rock are seen having lavish events in places like Cannes. Inviting American singers to perform for millions of dollars on their birthdays and weddings. Meanwhile, young men are being sent to fight and die. This is what people’s stupidity and ugliness looks like. And if you think it’s only Ukraine, I suggest you look in the mirror. We live in a country where Congress is powerless by chose most of them are bought out by AIPAC money. All the while, they ask you for money for war, but the profits are theirs the entire time. Now we have airline CEOs openly saying that ticket prices are higher because of fuel costs and tensions with Iran. But they also admit that when fuel prices go down, ticket prices will stay high because people are willing to pay. And then they dare to tell you that you live in capitalism. No under capitalism, you take the risk and keep the reward. That's how capitalism works. What we have in America is corporatism, you take the risk and they keep the reward! Politicians from left, centre, and right asked the EU to lower its standards on climate, environment, and digital policy to unleash the EU economy. They did so by skipping public consultations in the name of urgency, prompted by the Draghi Report and under pressure from President Trump, who was speaking on behalf of America's most powerful companies. Now our national leaders want to make this emergency approach THE NEW NORMAL. The Commission has launched a "Better Regulation" consultation - open until tomorrow (February 4th) - that would NORMALIZE the urgent procedures that led to simplification. Hidden behind technocratic language, this proposal would dramatically reduce citizen and civil society input, as well as the evidence-gathering traditionally required to create or revise EU laws. Their justification? A "volatile geopolitical environment" requires speed and flexibility. Under this proposal, the Commission alone would decide when evidence matters, when public input is needed, and when scrutiny applies. But there’s more. During next week's European Council on February 12th will see Germany and Italy push for an even more dramatic power grab. Their joint paper proposes an "emergency brake" that would allow national governments to veto any proposal that creates "burden” (which remains undefined, unassessed) at their discretion. They also demand a "strict principle of discontinuity" under which national leaders, not the legislative process, decide what survives by systematically withdrawing proposals they deem outdated. People that got rich in part due to “rich people welfare” like Chamath Palihapitiya, david friedberg, and David Sacks of the The All-In Podcast — which I must listen to but hate doing so — love to fear monger about “existential crises” like “needing to win the AI race against China” so they can justify the trillions of dollars of big government spending that winds up in their bank accounts each year. If any form of technology is such a good idea because it’s existential to our economy or national security, why does the government allow the profits of such *public* investment accrue to a select few in the *private* sector? Why doesn’t the government just develop services like SpaceX or Palantir and return any profits or capital gains to American tax payers instead of making a select few rich people like Elon Musk or alexkarp richer? Again, I’m not at all advocating for either side of the policy debate. I’m just red pill’ing you so that you realize how much the government itself is part of the problem regarding our K-but-soon-to-be-lower-case-i-shaped society. ❤️+💙=💜 P.S.
