Duplicitous Jen Psaki acts like Chicken Little regarding the strategic oil reserves but neglects to mention the Biden administration’s fault in causing and exacerbating the problem in the first place: Jen Psaki: “Governments around the world are considering tapping their own strategic oil reserves to compensate. Now, the country with the biggest strategic oil reserve is supposed to be the United States. And when Trump took office, he promised he would refill America's strategic oil reserves, quote, right to the top. But a year later, when Trump desperately needs those reserves to keep oil prices low as Iran chokes off key oil routes, they are still less than 60% full.” Chris Wright: “We have we have about 415 million barrels in storage right now. Very unfortunately, the Biden administration drained almost 300 million barrels out, mostly to lower gasoline prices for a midterm election without disruptions in energy flows. That's not what the SPR is about. The SPR is about this when we have short term disruptions in flows to replace those flows. But, Dana, we will simultaneously sell this oil in the near term when it's needed and buy long term oil, meaning say 12 months down the road and we'll pull out 170 million barrels and we'll put back in 200 million barrels in the next year. So we'll actually have more oil in our SPR a year from now than we do today.” Jen, you might want to circle back to the facts when you get a chance.

Despite this, the SPR was drained by 33/m barrels in September 2022 alone. At this rate, it would take over eight years to refill the SPR to the same level it was when Biden took office (-293 million barrels).

I think the president is absolutely paying a political price for $4 gasoline right now, especially as the midterm narrative is already starting much earlier than usual. But what happens between now and November is still unknown. If oil prices fall back to the $70–$75 range, gas prices could stop being a major issue altogether. The challenge is timing even if oil drops immediately, there’s still oil sitting in inventory, tankers already on the water, and supply moving through refineries at higher prices. Realistically, it would take about three weeks for consumers to fully feel lower gas prices at the pump.
