if you’re not a citizen, then yes, you’ll need a visa. And guess what? That visa will come with basic conditions, like being able to support yourself, having no criminal convictions, and speaking English. That’s not extreme, it’s protecting the public and respecting the taxpayer. And if Starmer thinks that’s racist , he’s really on the wrong side of the British people.

What bothers me about these “standard English versus Black English” videos is the assumption hiding underneath them: that Black Americans are some linguistically uniform population who all speak the same way. We are not. Black Americans speak Standard American English, African American Vernacular English, Southern dialects, regional dialects, professional jargon, academic English, church vernacular and everything in between. Many people move effortlessly between registers depending on where they are and who they are speaking to. That is called “code-switching”. Apparently human linguistic complexity survived right up until politics discovered demographics. AAVE is a real dialect with identifiable grammatical patterns. It is not “how Black people talk,” and speaking Standard English does not make a Black person less authentically Black. That is where some progressive rhetoric irritates me. In its frantic attempt to appear culturally sensitive, it can become astonishingly patronizing. Lowering expectations, treating ordinary literacy as culturally foreign, or presenting one dialect as the authentic voice of an entire racial population does not elevate Black people. It reduces us. I refuse to have my vocabulary, education, diction or intellectual standards racially assigned to me. Black America is not a dialect. And politicians, educators or activists who cannot comprehend that diversity should stop pretending they understand us. #AStoneGroove #SilentMajoritySpeaks

AOC: I understand the anxieties, especially when it comes to being able to afford a place to live and to feel like our ability to have one home is being eclipsed by other people’s fourth, fifth, and sixth homes. There are some folks who will tell you that’s just the way it is, and that’s just a free market, and that’s just because that’s the value of that property. But I want us to consider a different understanding of this. I really think that someone values their first home—their only home—a lot more than they value their 10th. And the value of us not being one paycheck away from the street is way bigger than the marginal tax value of someone’s write-off house that I’m sure some people even forget they have. We have to make sure that everyone can just have a shot. That’s what this is about.
