I learned a few things when I very first moved to Appalachia.. almost two years ago. At dusk and especially at night, don’t whistle not even in the house.. ever!! At dusk and especially at night don’t answer when someone calls your name in the woods.. don’t even look in the trees.. ever!! and if all sounds of nature stop, look at the ground and walk away. Get in the house and don’t answer the door.. I learned last night why you’re not supposed to do this stuff… it’s cuz “They will come” Honestly I don’t even want to know who “they” are And I’m NOT bout to do any of it to find out who “they” fucking are.. Nope. Not going to chance it.

A lot of cultures - Japanese, Hawaiian, Celtic, etc. - have great stories about not whistling at night. If the birds aren’t singing, you shouldn’t be singing - it’s like ringing a bell saying “dinner’s here.”

I walk around the woods at night listening for people whistling. I find them and then knock on their doors.

It's not all that mysterious. Whatever you believe you receive. If you believe spirits will come when you whistle, guess what, they will come. If I was there, I'd boldly whistle and then declare that my property belongs to me, not them, and I'd let them know they are not welcome and is command them to leave, in the name of Jesus, and never return. I'd declare with the authority I have in Christ that all unclean spirits are subject to me and that I can whistle anytime, and everytime I want to, and no unclean spirits are allowed to do anything in response. Fear and superstition makes these people vulnerable to spirits that are beneath them.

When I lived in North Carolina, my friend’s grandmother thought she was being harassed at night by a neighbor she thought was a witch. So she put a colander under her bed, with the thought that the witch would get trapped, as she’d have to exit all holes before morning. (1/2)

Some birds can mimic human sounds, so it was probably just that.
