New short course: Attention in Transformers: Concepts and Code in PyTorch. Last week we released a course on how LLM transformers work. This week, go deeper and learn about the technical ideas behind the attention mechanism, and see how to code it in PyTorch. This course is built with Joshua Starmer, Founder and CEO of StatQuest. The attention mechanism was a breakthrough that led to transformers, the architecture powering large language models like ChatGPT. Transformers, introduced in the 2017 paper: "Attention is All You Need" by Viswani and others, took off because of its highly scalable design. In this course, you’ll learn how the attention mechanism, a key element of transformer-based LLMs, works and implement it in PyTorch. You'll develop deep intuition about building reliable, functional, and scalable AI applications. What you will do: - Understand the evolution of the attention mechanism, a key breakthrough that led to transformers. - Learn the relationships between word embeddings, positional embeddings, and attention. - Learn about the Query, Key, and Value matrices, and how to produce and use them in attention. - Walk through the math required to calculate self-attention and masked self-attention to learn why and how they work. - Understand the difference between self-attention and masked self-attention and how one is used in the encoder to build context-aware embeddings and the other is used in the decoder for generative outputs. - Learn the details of the encoder-decoder architecture, cross-attention, and multi-head attention and how they are all incorporated into a transformer. - Use PyTorch to code a class that implements self-attention, masked self-attention, and multi-head attention. He went on to claim that Nigel Farage is weak and is already waving the white flag regarding the growing threat of Islamic influence in Britain. It would be interesting to hear what people think about this. Personally, I’m not aligning myself with any one party just yet, but when it comes to voting in the next election, it will certainly be between Restore and Reform UK.

I actually agree with this imam. The sharia penal code, the hudud, is barely 1% of Islamic sharia, and it isn’t even enforced in most Islamic countries. So the fear that Muslims are coming to impose amputations and stonings on America is overblown. But here is what the imam won’t tell you. Sharia is not mainly about the penal code, and the threat it poses to the West was never primarily violence or terrorism. The real danger is the erasure of individual liberty and religious freedom in any region that becomes heavily Muslim, because sharia governs the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims, and it enforces blasphemy norms either by law, as in Islamic states, or by fear and self-censorship everywhere else. By that measure, every single Islamic country on earth applies sharia. Not one of them permits full freedom of speech. Not one of them grants non-Muslims the same rights as Muslims. The penal code is the part they’ll debate with you. The erasure of your freedoms is the part they won’t.

A glimpse into the life of a Canadian soldier – Captain (Retd.) Thady Holmes – and how the Inner Engineering program transformed his life from a state of trauma to one filled with purpose. "I started my career as a Canadian paratrooper at the age of 17. Between the period of 2009 to 2017, I don't have many memories to relish. All that I can remember are the gloomy days when I lost my mother after returning from war, losing my son, and also a close friend to suicide. I had lost hope to live and was having suicidal thoughts. I remember trying to pull the trigger by putting a pistol into my mouth, but thankfully, it didn't work properly, hence didn't fire. In 2017, dancing was the only thing that I enjoyed. It would ward off my worry and anxiety. Even after retiring from the military, having a successful career in finance and a happy family of three, emotionally, I was still down and this led to fluctuating weight and health. Luckily, I discovered Sadhguru through YouTube in 2019 and his videos motivated me to get initiated into Shambhavi Mahamudra. I intensified my practice and as days passed, my experience became so profound that I could experience something inexplicable, which sparked my interest to learn Sanskrit. I was moved when Sadhguru spoke about the Cauvery farmers ending their lives, and I started working with people who needed special emotional care. I met with participants of the Ukrainian Youth Forum “Youth Acts.” Today, our country celebrates Youth Day. Of course, for all of us, security is the first priority. But the Government must also take very specific, clear action to support all normal forms of public life in Ukraine – so that Ukrainian families, our people, our youth, and our children have a normal environment for life in Ukraine, one that is as fulfilling as possible. The renewed Government of Ukraine is now preparing the Cabinet of Ministers’ program of action, and I expect that civilian aspects of life, and youth policy in particular, will receive sufficient attention in the Government’s program. And we all understand the depth of this task – it is not simply about something the state can give, or something a person can do – independently or in cooperation within their community or with the state. It is much more than that. It is about reasons to stay in Ukraine, to live in Ukraine, to plan your own life and your family’s life in Ukraine, and to know that Ukraine will care about you and your family, about your future.

The renewed Government of Ukraine is now preparing the Cabinet of Ministers’ program of action, and I expect that civilian aspects of life, and youth policy in particular, will receive sufficient attention in the Government’s program. And we all understand the depth of this task – it is not simply about something the state can give, or something a person can do – independently or in cooperation within their community or with the state. It is much more than that. It is about reasons to stay in Ukraine, to live in Ukraine, to plan your own life and your family’s life in Ukraine, and to know that Ukraine will care about you and your family, about your future.

Most people have no idea about the real history of Al-Aqsa Mosque, because they’ve only been fed the Islamic Palestinian propaganda version of events. They believe that Al-Aqsa has always been Islam’s third holiest site, that it has belonged to Muslims since the dawn of time, and that Israel is the oppressor for merely existing near it. None of that is true. The Temple Mount in Jerusalem was the holiest site in Judaism for over a thousand years before Islam even appeared in history. It housed the First and Second Jewish Temples, the center of Jewish worship and pilgrimage. When the Romans destroyed the Second Temple in 70 AD, they built pagan shrines over it, but its Jewish identity never disappeared. In the 7th century Islam emerges and expands through conquest, and begins hijacking Jewish and Christian sites, prophets, and narratives. At first, Jerusalem had no major significance in Islam. Muhammad never set foot there. There was no mosque. There was no pilgrimage. There was no Islamic history tied to the city. But that changed during the brutal power struggle between Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan and Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr. By the late 7th century, Islam was deeply divided. Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr controlled Mecca and Medina, the two holiest cities in Islam. And Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, the Umayyad Caliph, controlled the Levant. But Abd al-Malik had a problem, he didn’t want the people of the Levant traveling to Mecca for pilgrimage, because that would give power to his rival. Abd al-Malik declared the Temple Mount as Alaqsa mosque that was mentioned in the quran, and he made it an alternative place of pilgrimage. He ordered the construction of the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque to divert attention from Mecca. And just like that, Islam manufactured a holy site for political gain. The real Masjid Al-Aqsa referred to in the Quran was not in Jerusalem, it was between Mecca and Ta’if. There was no mosque in Jerusalem at the time. There was no Islamic presence there. Yet, centuries later, after Islam had conquered the city, the Islamic narrative retroactively applied this Quranic verse to Jerusalem, again, for political convenience. If Israel wanted to act like Islamic conquerors, it could have easily done to Al-Aqsa what Turkey did to the Hagia Sophia. It could have converted the mosque into the Third Temple, banned Muslim prayer on the site, erased any trace of Islamic history, as Muslims did to Christian and Jewish sites throughout history. But Israel didn’t do that. Israel allows Muslims to pray there freely. Israel protects Al-Aqsa, even as it is used to spread anti-Semitic propaganda and incite violence. Yet, despite this, the world condemns Israel for merely existing in its own capital.
