Sen. Mitch McConnell's prolonged absence from Congress has many talking about whether America's leaders are too old. But perhaps the problem is not that its leaders themselves are seniors, but that they govern in the interests of older Americans:

You miss the point -- they have no idea what is going on in the American they no longer inhabit as a neighbor. They can't tell you what is in the mind of a 25 year old or even a 35 year old.

71 yr old here. Rest assured that @GOP members old or young do not govern in my interest. They vote in the interest of themselves, their rich donors & corporations! BTW: I know lots of seniors who feel this way as well!

Fareed do you know anyone who's worked in retail or food service all of their life? Or, even half their life? Do you know anyone who's made bad decisions in their life? Some of us live on SS. Do you think the ones who do wish they didn't have to? Some need this help.

Distinguishing “old” from “previous generations”: Blaming older generations for a plurality of the world’s ills is stylish. I accept the premise for argument’s sake as well as the insidious tautology. Since everything happening flows from prior conditions according to nature’s laws, it must be that the present results from the previous. In other words, crediting older generations for a plurality of the world’s blessings is equally insightful. But all previous generations were, at some point, young and ambitious. Accepting the premise, what percentage of the world’s ills caused by previous generations were born of youthful ambition? The rhetorical question is meant to inspire reflection. Now, I distinguish “idealistic” from “concerned about the consequences of our actions.” Confession: When I was younger, I was more idealistic and less concerned about the consequences of my actions and more likely to have stars in my eyes. Idealism and ambition combine to assign righteousness to our causes, condoning extremism.

Both parties need to get better at identifying and grooming potential young leaders. This is part of the reason so many young voters are alienated from politics in general and do not show up to vote in elections.

Perhaps it’s the existing system at least has a chance of maintaining what you have. A new uncertain system by definition is riskier and thus less prone to support. Only when forced into a corner, like in Syria 2012, do people yearn and accept change.

Agreed, we need to spend more in the young. It is the city, county and states that spend $ in children. For example, property taxes support public education. …and surely the young have 6O - 90 minutes to research candidates and vote, over a campaign cycle.

This might be the first time I found myself disagreeing with Fareed's POV. It comes across as a zero-sum game, as if it is necessary to reduce money going to seniors (most of which is Medicare and Social Security) in order to bring more support to the younger generation (the need for which, I agree).

The problem is: if they retire, a governor from an opposition party replaces them with an appointment.
