Mozambique Police teargas people who gathered this morning to peacefully protest at the scene of the brutal killing of opposition lawyer, Elvino Dias and a party official, Paulo Guambe. President William Ruto: Are you telling me Rex is the one who burnt Parliament? There are criminals who infiltrated and caused mayhem and in fact some of the criminals harmed the peaceful protestors. Many of the peaceful protestors lost phones and were attacked by criminals. I feel for Rex and the mother, this should not happen to any child in Kenya especially when they are engaged in a peaceful demonstration #PresidentialRoundtable

Zimbabwean Member of Parliament for Chinhoyi, Leslie Mhangwa, was speaking at a Workers’ Day event when the microphone was rudely taken away from him by ZANUPF thugs who are part of the intelligence infrastructure. He was saved by members of the public who were listening to his address. Now, if a Member of Parliament is not allowed to speak at a public event addressing issues that are affecting workers, and the microphone is violently taken away from him simply because he has said that the inflation rate is not matching wage increases, and that is seen as a threat to the government of the day, what kind of society has Zimbabwe become? What about an ordinary person like myself or others? What would happen to us if this can happen to an elected official, a Member of Parliament who is speaking to the constituents who elected him, yet is not allowed to do so? These are the things that have turned Zimbabwe into a banana republic. These are the actions that continue to delegitimise our country’s standing internationally. You cannot have mob justice. You cannot have a mob turning up at an official event where a Member of Parliament has been given the floor to speak and is then treated like this.

There was a major police operation today around the Victorian Parliament House precinct to protect a group of Victorian women holding a rally to discuss women's issues. Multiple police units including the mounted branch were deployed to ensure the safety of the women. A large police cordon was also established around Parliament House to ensure that a counter-protest by trans rights activists could not reach the women and disrupt their rally. At one point, former Member of Parliament Andy Meddick was seen using his parliamentary access pass to bypass the cordon and antagonize the women by waving a trans flag. He was escorted away by police. A small breakaway group of trans rights activists attempted to enter the women's space but was held at bay by police. At the conclusion of the rally, the women were escorted by police to a safe area to leave the space; however, that space was rushed by some trans rights activists, and even former MP Andy Meddick was seen loitering there and getting into arguments with the women. There was no pepper spray or violence in the cordoned-off space for the women, and it was a peaceful rally despite attempts to intimidate them. The media are again trying to frame innocent women as being party to the violence by the trans rights activists against police and members of the public in their specific areas or at a later time. You can see at one point in this highlight video trans rights activists holding up signs calling for violence against police. 🚨HAPPENING NOW: Hundreds arrested in Parliament Square in protest organised by Defend Our Juries The arrest of otherwise peaceful protesters is a violation of the UK’s international obligations to protect the rights of freedom of expression and assembly. The protesters in Parliament Square were not inciting violence and it is entirely disproportionate to the point of absurdity to be treating them as terrorists. Instead of criminalising peaceful demonstrators, the Government should be focusing on taking immediate and unequivocal action to put a stop to Israel’s genocide and ending any risk of UK complicity in it.

I have read most of the comments to my earlier tweet today and for the record let me categorically state that the protest in Federal Capital Territory remained peaceful until the police launched an attack, firing teargas and shots at the protesters. To the best of my knowledge, there were no reports of any shops being looted or vandalized in Abuja. So, I ask you my people, what options do we have going forward as a people? How can we peacefully demand justice and reform? -Iretikingibe
