One can disregard the fiery outrage at an inconvenient intelligence assessment. As the former head of Israeli military intelligence Amos Yadlin told me, neither Israel nor the U.S. believed air strikes would destroy Iran’s nuclear program entirely. The true impact, he says, is the U.S. decision to preempt: “Nobody thought that you can destroy 100% of Iran’s nuclear program. Iranians are waiting for this attack for 20 years. They dispersed all their nuclear sites. They fortified it. They put it under a mountain. The physical damage is not important. What is important is that for the first time in history an American president decided to preempt a nuclear program by a rogue state.”
