the phenomenon is called Rebracketing. one of my favourite examples is the word "ammo". it's from the French la'munition, which is "the munition" which was rebracketed in English as l'amunition, "the ammunition". and from there ammo

Rahman is tough here. Otherwise he just becomes Rahim/Hakim/Aziz.

Lol I had the same thought when he first started his campaign. Abdul is probably more recognizable to the average American. Also avoids being called Abd for short

THANK YOU! This has been driving me crazy, especially because his surname begins with "El"! "Abd-ul El" just stop! And that's not even getting into the missing elision of the lams... It's so painful to hear over and over again.

You shouldn’t lighten the definition of words as someone who cares for language, Abd means slave not servant.

But Egyptians would be more likely to use عبده for short, "servant of him [God]."

Egyptians most commonly nickname abdulrahman as abdo. “aboody” is more common for abdallah but even then it’s usually abood not aboody

Depends on the country- in the Khaleej عبودي is used for Abdullah- عبدالرحمن is shortened to حمني or Hamani

Unlike English, name-shortening nicknames in Arabic are very intimate. You can't just call a grown man Abboody.
