Sending a file to someone sitting next to you shouldn't need a server. So I built react-native-wifi-aware. It goes straight phone to phone at wifi speeds. No router, no internet. Using Nitro Modules. Repo:

when I’m having a “I really need someone to be there for me” moment, but I realize I genuinely have no one so I just lay in bed and stare at my phone.

You always notice the calm one last. No phone. No rush. No need to be seen. Just sitting there like he's already waiting for someone specific. Maybe that's why you already know the seat beside him is yours. 🖤

SOMEONE BUILT A WAY TO SEND FILES BETWEEN TWO PHONES WITH NO WIFI, NO BLUETOOTH AND NO NETWORK AT ALL it works with just a screen flashing qr codes at a camera one device plays an endless stream of animated qr codes, the other one points its camera at the screen and rebuilds the file out of the light no pairing, no app, no shared network, nothing but the camera > its pulling about 129 kb/s, a full 2mb image transfers in seconds > theres no back channel, the receiver can never ask for a missed frame, so it uses fountain codes, every frame is a scrambled mix of the file rather than one piece of it > that means the receiver just collects any frames it can catch in any order, and once it has enough it can reconstruct the whole file > dropping frames costs you a little time but never breaks the transfer > you can point the camera at a stream thats already running and it just locks on mid flight he was building a cached mp3 player because he was sick of ads and bad streaming quality. he wanted a way to send tracks phone to phone without both phones being on the same network, and realized flashing qr codes could carry the data he built the whole working prototype in one night with claude code its open source and already at 375 stars

251024 GQ Korea Q&A with Kai Q: What is the phone application that you use the most these days? 🐻 Rather than an application, what I do the most these days is beg others for their hotspot. My phone was shattered [T/N: When he dropped a dumbbell on it], so I had bought another one in a hurry in the USA. But when I got back to Korea, you have to register/activate it again, and I haven’t been able to do that yet. Life is not possible without wifi! [So I ask others] “Could you turn on your hotspot?”

I finally decided to try out an idea I had a while ago - using a custom React renderer to power Live Activities through React Native. And you know what? It actually works pretty well. Fast refresh is there too!

Russia has a “smile to pay” system 🙂 Just smile at the camera and pay for your purchase – no card, no phone. Would you try it?

chat even without wi-fi and mobile data it's called protestchat it never asks for a network (repo in replies) e.g. Delhi rolled portable jammers into a protest on july 20 and cut mobile data with it so this dev built a fix 2.4 ghz stays wide open the entire time every other messenger dies the second the internet does BUT this one no > phones hand msgs to each other over bluetooth le > zero routing, every phone carries every unexpired envelope and offers it to whoever it meets > the recipient is just whoever can decrypt it > walk out of the jammed zone and your phone delivers the queue for people still stuck inside > 6 hour expiry, panic wipe, fresh key per message > 72 tests on the crypto and mesh layer > MIT and no account anywhere so if u dont have an internet or gov jammed it just use this repo to text someone how it works:

You point at the mess and say "clean this." That is the whole manual. Matic just shipped this. No app, no map to draw, no menu. The robot listens in more than 70 languages, watches where your hand points, and drives to that spot. Say "follow me" and it trails you into the next room. All of it runs on the robot itself, so it works with the WiFi off. Nine years of work for one thing: a machine you talk to like a dog that actually listens. Matic Robots

Wow! Send A File By Just The Camera! A vibe coder used AI to build a file transfer system that sends data between two phones using only a screen and a camera. One phone displays a new type of animated QR codes while the other scans them to rebuild the file, with no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cables needed. It is fully optical and local. The system uses fountain codes that create each QR frame as a random mix of file data. This keeps transfers working even if some frames are missed, reaching speeds of about 129 KB/s for a 2 MB image. The entire project was built in one night and released as open source. The idea came from a music project where the developer wanted to share MP3 files without streaming or using the same network. Animated QR codes became the solution, showing a creative new way to transfer files with everyday phone hardware. GitHub link:

Iberia’s first Starlink plane went live. Madrid to São Paulo with WiFi that actually works. Free for everyone on board. No cabin tiers. No hourly meter. No watching one email load like it is crossing the Atlantic by canoe. Speeds can hit around 450 to 500 Mbps. Basically home broadband at cruising altitude. This is only the first plane. Iberia wants Starlink on 35% of its long-haul fleet by year-end, while IAG plans to fit more than 500 aircraft across British Airways, Aer Lingus, and Vueling. Airline WiFi finally stopped being a prank. Starlink / Writer: Annette, Designer: Janné

A year ago, Vodafone made the first space call from an area of no coverage in the UK using a standard mobile phone and commercial satellites built to offer a full mobile broadband experience. 🛰️ Discover how we got it off the ground:

A lot of people have been asking so I made a repo to show how easy it is to setup a custom robot in mjlab. You don't need to clone and copy your robot into mjlab!
