"Bum" Phillips Born 102 Years Ago Today🤠🩵🕯️ A Tribute to the 'Patron Saint' of the #Oilers' "Luv Ya Blue" Phenomenon of the 1970s Head Coach and Leader of the Houston Oilers and New Orleans #Saints A "country gentleman" who completely rejuvenated a hapless franchise, restoring it to football prominence, while invigorating a city and fanbase in the process. Bum was one of #NFL history's most colorful characters, always good for an unforgettable country idiom. Unmistakably recognizable in his cowboy boots and Stetson hat, he instilled togetherness and indoctrinated team unity (both on and off the field) with the players on his Oilers and Saints teams of the 1970s and '80s — often allowing "family days" for his players at Saturday practice sessions and holding team pizza and beer nights during the season. Bum was an ingenious coach — a true innovative defensive mind, one who never seems to get his just due in that regard. Widely acknowledged as one of the inventors of the defensive numbering system that is currently used in the sport today, he — along with Chuck Fairbanks — took the basic, elementary principles of the college 3-4 defensive scheme and modernized it in earnest into a full-fledged pro base defensive alignment. Prior to this, elements of the pro 3-4 had only been seen in various substitution packages, most notably Bill Arnsparger's "53" defense for the Dolphins' Super Bowl teams. The linchpin of the alignment was future Hall of Famer Curley Culp, who Bum deployed as the proverbial "eye of the hurricane" at the newly-revolutionized nose tackle position. His play in 1975 would garner him NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors by the NEA. In 1975 — his first season as head coach of the Oilers — Phillips led #Houston to its first winning season in eight years and its first 10-win season since 1962. This postgame interview with Stephanie White from yesterday was absolutely hilarious because the camera was on Caitlin Clark during the entire interview. 1. Stephanie said that the Fever lost the game yesterday due to turnovers. This comment immediately threw Caitlin under the bus, and her performance warranted that type of accountability. 2. They asked Stephanie about her star players being in foul trouble every game now. Stephanie told reporters that this was due to the new “freedom of movement” rules that were implemented prior to the 2026 season. ————————————————— The freedom of movement rules were implemented as a direct result of Caitlin Clark crying to the WNBA’s front office. During the off-season, Caitlin praised the WNBA for these new rule changes. She now has 5 fouls in every game. Caitlin pushed for these new rules thinking that they would benefit her OFFENSIVELY……and they have, which is why she is scoring at a much higher clip. What Caitlin failed to take into consideration was the fact that these same rules would DESTROY her DEFENSIVELY because she lacks the athleticism necessary to keep up with much quicker guards on the DEFENSIVE end without using her hands.

With only 11 days until Alabama Football starts the 2025 season, today we remember Mike Shula, who many today never got to see play as the starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide in the mid-80s. Being the son of an NFL legend didn’t prevent the left-hander from leading Christopher Columbus High School in Miami to the state championship game his senior year and earning a scholarship offer from new Alabama head coach Ray Perkins. Shula worked his way into the starting role as a sophomore, but the first game of his junior season in 1985 solidified his legacy in Alabama history. After Georgia blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to give the Bulldogs a stunning 16-13 lead with just 50 seconds remaining in Sanford Stadium, Shula displayed the cool demeanor that first attracted the attention of Perkins. Starting at the Alabama 29-yard line, Shula carved up the Georgia defense, completing 4-of-5 passes for 71 yards. He hit Al Bell across the middle for a game-winning, 17-yard touchdown that gave the Crimson Tide a thrilling 20-16 Labor Day victory that took just 45 seconds. “It wasn’t like we just sat there and let them score on that last drive,” Georgia defensive coordinator Bill Lewis said. “We tired to mix things up with the blitz and zone, but Shula did a good job finding the holes in the zone. They anticipated the blitz real well.”
