September 25, 1977 Joe Namath's Final Touchdown Pass In his thirteenth pro season, quarterback Joe Namath registers his first win for a team other than the Jets — a convincing 20-0 Rams victory over the Eagles in Los Angeles. Namath throws two touchdowns — the second (and final one of his career), a textbook double play-fake dime to Lawrence McCutcheon. Don Criqui and Joe's former longtime backfield mate Emerson Boozer call it for CBS.

Heaven Birthday, O.A. "Bum" Phillips Born 103 Years Ago Today🤠🩵 The Patron Saint of the Oilers' "Luv Ya Blue" Phenomenon of the 1970s Head Coach of the Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints One of NFL history's most colorful characters, always good for an unforgettable country idiom Bum was "country gentleman" who completely rejuvenated a hapless Houston franchise, restored it to prominence, and reinvigorated a city and fanbase in the process. Unmistakably recognizable in his custom cowboy boots and Stetson hat, he instilled togetherness and indoctrinated team unity both on and off the field with the players on his Oilers and Saints teams of the 1970s and '80s — often facilitating "family days" for his players at Saturday practices, and holding team pizza and beer nights during the season. Bum was an ingenious coach — an innovative defensive mind who never seems to get his just due in that regard. Widely acknowledged as one of the inventors of the defensive numbering system currently used in the sport today, he — along with Chuck Fairbanks — took the basic, elementary principles of the college 3-4 defensive scheme and modernized it into a full-fledged pro base defensive alignment. Prior to this, elements of the pro 3-4 had only been utilized in various substitution packages, most notably Bill Arnsparger's "53" defense for the Dolphins' Super Bowl teams. The linchpin of Houston's alignment was future Hall of Famer Curley Culp, who Bum deployed as the proverbial "eye of the hurricane" at the newly-revolutionized nose tackle position. Culp's play in 1975 would garner him NFL NEA Defensive Player of the Year honors. In 1975 — his first year as head coach of the Oilers — Phillips led the Oilers to their first winning season in eight years and their first 10-win season since 1962. In 1978, Bum guided the Oilers to their first postseason appearance in nine years, and from 1978 through 1980, led Houston to three consecutive postseason appearances — something that had not occurred since the first three seasons of the franchise's existence, 1960 through 1962. Bum recorded five winning campaigns during his six seasons as the Oilers' head coach, four of those with 10-or-more victories. In 1978 and again in '79, his teams would succumb to their fierce AFC Central rival — the eventual back-to-back Super Bowl champion Steelers — in the AFC Championship. After his time in Houston, Phillips coached the Saints from 1981 to 1985, leading New Orleans to its second non-losing season ever in 1983. Heaven Birthday to a true original🕯️

Heaven Birthday, Earl Morrall🕯️ Unsung Hero of the Undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins After winning the 1968 NFL MVP for the Colts (playing in place of injured legend Johnny Unitas), Earl lost to the Jets in a historic upset in Super Bowl III. In 1972, Don Shula — who had been his head coach in Baltimore — brought the 38-year-old journeyman Morrall to the #Dolphins to back up quarterback Bob Griese. Griese broke his leg in Week 5. Enter Morrall. Earl guided Miami to 11 consecutive victories during its inexorable march to a perfect 17-0 season and #PhinsUp's first Super Bowl title. Earl led the NFL in passer rating in '72 (91.0), earning the PFWA's NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award.

Interesting dialogue between Vic Schaefer and Kentucky HC Kenny Brooks after the game... Brooks said Texas is the best defensive team in the country but the new rule changes on defense benefits the Horns "I don't like his style of basketball it's a lot of fouling but it's not a foul if they don't call it, and they do it extremely well...They don't get away with anything, they play within the rules. They just play right into the rules" When asked about the new defensive rules Schaefer acknowledged he doesn't see an advantage for his team "I don't think it benefits me, I got people in foul trouble all over the scoresheet" #HookEm | #Texas Questions from Kirk Bohls & Danny Davis

This postgame interview with Stephanie White from yesterday was absolutely hilarious because the camera was on Caitlin Clark during the entire interview. 1. Stephanie said that the Fever lost the game yesterday due to turnovers. This comment immediately threw Caitlin under the bus, and her performance warranted that type of accountability. 2. They asked Stephanie about her star players being in foul trouble every game now. Stephanie told reporters that this was due to the new “freedom of movement” rules that were implemented prior to the 2026 season. ————————————————— The freedom of movement rules were implemented as a direct result of Caitlin Clark crying to the WNBA’s front office. During the off-season, Caitlin praised the WNBA for these new rule changes. She now has 5 fouls in every game. Caitlin pushed for these new rules thinking that they would benefit her OFFENSIVELY……and they have, which is why she is scoring at a much higher clip. What Caitlin failed to take into consideration was the fact that these same rules would DESTROY her DEFENSIVELY because she lacks the athleticism necessary to keep up with much quicker guards on the DEFENSIVE end without using her hands.

October 2, 1994 Quarterback Steve Young gets pulled from the game, mid-series. A watershed game that serves as a wake-up call for the eventual-Super Bowl champion 49ers, and a crossroads for Young's career The underdog Eagles crush the Niners at Candlestick, 40-8 — San Francisco's worst home loss in 14 years. Down by 25 in the third quarter, 49ers head coach George Seifert controversially removes his future Hall of Fame quarterback in the middle of a series. The move incenses Young, who vehemently vents his frustration in full view of the national television audience. But his emotional reaction garners respect for the quarterback in the post-Joe Montana Niners locker room and galvanizes the team moving forward.
