$Sulwe means ‘morning star’ in the Luo language. The name has special significance for our Umani Springs Head Keeper, Philip, who is of the Luo tribe. He has been by Sulwe's mother's side - an orphan named Sonje - since her earliest days with us, when she was recovering from a fractured leg. Now, with the other Umani Keepers, he gets to be the honorary grandfather to her daughter. For us, Sulwe is our guiding star too. The shelter manager stopped us right before we walked into the kennel area and said quietly, “If you take the male out for a walk, don’t shut the door on the female. They had already been returned twice, not because they were aggressive — in fact, they were incredibly gentle and affectionate. The real issue was how strongly they were attached to each other. If one of them left the room, the other would cry and panic as if something terrible had happened. The shelter was running out of space and had started discussing the possibility of separating them permanently to make adoption easier… even though everyone knew it would devastate them. I stood there watching Rex carefully place his large chin across Luna’s back. Both dogs were shaking slightly, aware that people were studying them and deciding they were simply “too much.” My husband looked at me, then back at the two nervous dogs clinging to each other. Imagine this. Putting your child’s image and health background up on to a public website along with around 80 other children in similar situations in a fight to get funding allocated to help ease their pain, and get them the treatment each and every one of them deserve. Imagine the relief you felt when the €19million was approved and you finally felt like things would improve. Imagine then, finding out that Children's Health Ireland decided your children weren’t worth it. Despite that group of children and parents fighting to get the money, they decided they would just spend it as they see fit. After all this time we finally have proof that our children are being neglected by the state. Our children are seen as less deserving and less important.
