Ok but why are 15-year old girls (not "women") on birth control in the first place, and is there consideration and control for that? Are they experiencing PCOS? Acne? Sexually active? 15 is young!

I had to start taking the pill when I was 11 because my bleeding wouldn’t stop. Within a year I was put on antidepressants, which made things far worse, and at such a confusing time. I stopped both before high school and did so much better. This study doesn’t surprise me at all.

This is interesting - hormones certainly play a role in emotions. I wonder if those individuals who have it prescribed for medical needs, might have struggled no matter. A lot of confounds. But we also know birth control has a definite impact on emotional range, etc.

Progesterone, not synthetic “progestins” is an important modulator of GABA. Additionally, progesterone is broken down enzymatically to allopregnanolone very important for the brain, and it also raises BDNF.
