One of the easiest ways to understand costly signaling is to look at criminals. In decades past, if you wanted to signal your membership in the criminal underworld, you could do so with a relatively simple tattoo. Maybe one on your upper bicep, or a small neck tattoo: something modest but clearly identifiable. But after those kinds of tattoos became common among ordinary middle-class people, they lost their signaling value. What you increasingly see among criminals and prison inmates today is much more extreme body modification: tattoos covering the entire face, neck, and body. A very costly signal. A middle-class person might get a bicep tattoo, but they are unlikely to tattoo their entire face. Once a signal becomes mainstream, criminals must take costlier measures to distinguish themselves.
