The suspension came just hours after Amit Segal, one of Israel's most powerful television journalists and broadcasters, known to be close to Prime Minister Netanyahu, publicly attacked my freedom of speech in a series of posts on X. He was joined by several journalists from major Israeli media outlets, all targeting my political activity and my campaign to change the government. His posts preceded the suspension of my accounts by just a few hours. At the very moment my campaign was at the center of Israeli public debate, my accounts on Facebook and Instagram were suspended. As of this moment, I have no access whatsoever to my accounts. Despite reaching out to official Meta employees in Israel, the issue remains unresolved. This is precisely the kind of intervention we have read about in 'Careless People' by Sarah Wynn-Williams, the ways in which powerful social media platforms have been used across different countries to interfere in democratic processes and tilt the balance of power in favor of autocratic and anti-democratic forces. At this moment, I am experiencing what I can only describe as political interference and the weaponization of the world's largest social network against free speech happening here, in Israel. The Waqf Amendment Bill is a direct assault on the principles of justice, fairness, and the religious autonomy enshrined in the Constitution. Today, the ideas of equality and fairness are being challenged by the forces seeking to divide and marginalize. This is not just a legislative proposal. It's a test of our commitment to justice—a contest between fairness and discrimination, the principle of our constitution and the politics of exclusion. The proposed amendments directly violate Articles 14, 25 and 26 of the Constitution. An issue that deeply concerns me is allowing non-Muslim members into the Waqf board and council. As the Minister said, this is not like the Defence Ministry, which is a government property. This is not government property; it's governed by the Muslim law. My concern is if the government is saying it can appoint people, what is the guarantee that it will not appoint RSS-BJP people to the Waqf board, which will create permanent tensions? What is the guarantee that you will not appoint non-Hindu members to the Hindu endowment board, non-Sikh members to the Gurudwara committees, or non-Christian members to the church management? The government does not want this country to move forward. They don't want to talk about education, employment, economic growth, social justice, harmony or science, technology, and artificial intelligence—the very engines that will drive the nation forward. When people oppose the government, its leaders say, 'Go to Pakistan, go to Pakistan.' The Modi government should remember that when Indian Muslims had a choice to choose between India and Pakistan, they chose this country as their land. This imposition is not acceptable to us. As online harms intensify, children are particularly at risk. To better protect them, our government has introduced the Safe Social Media Act, which will make social media services and AI chatbot services safer for children. The bill, if passed, would require social media services and AI chatbot services to identify, mitigate, and address risks of harm on their platforms, and to develop services that are safe by design and put the safety of children first. It would also prevent Canadians under 16 from having accounts on social media services, while providing a process for social media platforms to seek an exemption if they can demonstrate that they have put in place a sufficient set of protections for children. This law is about holding platforms accountable and ensuring they have protections in place to keep children safe online, reduce harm before it happens, and ensure that digital spaces are safe by design all while protecting the privacy of Canadians.
