After the floods in WNC, we didn't have any/much service or information for about 3 days. We didn't know how bad the surrounding areas were, what roads were open or closed, where we could go for shelter and supplies... nothing. And we didn't want to waste gas we needed for the generator trying to find out. News was hard to find and wasting time wasn't an option... Information is vital. Not just for safety, but for psychological wellbeing and mental preservation under the intense stress of what's happening. You need to feel like people, especially the ones you love, see you and are standing with you. That there is someone waiting for you on the other side of hell that's worth making it through for.
