Ahh, it’s using a clipping mask! Just enable the 'Invert Mask' option under the ArtMesh settings.

never thought to use double masking so I can play around with the outline, this is super helpful, thank you!

The front part of the hair clip is only one layer? I always separate it because I thought it should be separated because it's intertwined like that--
