New course: MCP: Build Rich-Context AI Apps with Anthropic. If your MCP server has dozens of tools, it’s probably built wrong. You need tools that are specific and clear for each use case—but you also can’t have too many. This creates an almost impossible tradeoff that most companies don’t know how to solve. That’s why I interviewed my friend Alex Rattray (Alex Rattray), the founder and CEO of Stainless. Stainless builds APIs, SDKs, and MCP servers for companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Alex has spent years mastering how to make software talk to software, and he came on the show to share what he knows. I had him on Every 📧’s AI & I to talk about MCP and the future of the AI-native internet. We get into: • Design MCP servers to be lean and precise. Alex’s best practices for building reliable MCP servers start with keeping the toolset small, giving each tool a precise name and description, and minimizing the inputs and outputs the model has to handle. At Stainless, they also often add a JSON filter on top to strip out unnecessary data. • Make complex APIs manageable with dynamic mode. To solve the problem of how an AI figures out which tool to use in larger APIs, Stainless switches to “dynamic mode,” where the model gets only three tools: List the endpoints, pick one and learn about it, and then execute it. • MCP servers as business copilots. At Stainless, Alex uses MCP servers to connect tools like Notion and HubSpot, so he can ask questions like, “Which customers signed up last week?” The system queries multiple databases and returns a summary that would’ve otherwise taken multiple logins and searches. • Create a “brain” for your company with Claude Code. Alex built a shared company brain at Stainless by keeping Claude Code running on his system and asking it to save useful inputs—like customer feedback and SQL queries—into GitHub. Over time, this creates a curated archive his team can query easily. • The future of MCP is code execution. Instead of giving models hundreds of tools, Alex believes the most powerful setup will be a simple code execution tool and a doc search tool. The AI writes code against an API’s SDK, runs it on a server, and checks the docs when it gets stuck. Claude Code is terrible at UI design and everyone knows it so this guy fixed it by building an MCP that gives Claude its own AI design tool instead of going back and forth between a design platform and your code editor, Claude now creates the designs itself and drops them straight into your codebase the MCP has full context of your existing design system and project so everything it generates actually matches what you already have. one command to set up and it installs the MCP and skill files so Claude instantly knows how to use it if you're tired of the same Inter font, purple gradient, card grid layout on every project, this is definitely worth trying

MCP is mind-blowing. Here is a genius setup that will earn you a promotion with your manager. I have multiple data sources: data in S3, MySQL, and local files. Using Spice (an open-source project), I can co-locate all of that data behind a single SQL endpoint and augment it using MCP. Before, accessing data was slow, and I had to make multiple requests to get anything. After using Spice, I can query the data much faster (since it's mirrored locally), and I don't have to worry about where the data is coming from. Spice acts as an MCP server, so I can connect to it from my IDE or the Claude Desktop app and have access to all the data. But even more cool than that: Spice also acts as an MCP client, so it can connect to other MCP servers. This is where things get really interesting! Watch the video. I'm querying multiple data sources from my IDE and using the Google Maps MCP server for driving directions.

I'm still picking my jaw off the floor with this MCP update: Postman will now automatically build an MCP server for an API. Automatically! You select your API and the requests you want to include, and Potman will generate a Zip file with everything you need. In collaboration with Postman, I recorded a video showing how I generated an MCP server for the Google Maps API. It's glorious! Also, and before I forget: You can now test any MCP server with your Postman application. They built MCP right in, so now you can: • Connect to an MCP server • List out all of the available tools • Test any of the tools This is a 10x boost for the MCP ecosystem. If you've tried the default MCP debugger, you'll understand how huge a deal it is that you can do all of that from Postman now. Go here to give this a try:

Today we're launching Amplitude MCP MCP was made for data analytics. Ask a vague question and have an AI model iteratively query Amplitude to find you insights. Amplitude MCP exposes all of Amplitude's functionality so an agent can interact with it directly. It allows you to use Amplitude without having to know anything about Amplitude's user interface or your data taxonomy. It uses the intelligence of off the shelf AI agents, including Claude, Gemini, and Cursor, to query Amplitude data you already have to find answers. It leverages all of your existing Amplitude data and how it's used to navigate through large complex behavioral datasets. You can have conversations about your product data directly inside any AI model with MCP. It can create Amplitude dashboards and notebooks with what it finds and even make recommendations. I built an MCP server to connect the Cursor agent to GroundX, an open-source RAG system, and I'm not going back. This is officially insane! Here is what I did, step by step: First, a little bit of context. I maintain an end-to-end Machine Learning System with several pipelines to process data, train, evaluate, register, deploy, and monitor a model. I've written a lot of documentation explaining how the system works and how to modify and maintain it. There's also the documentation of the few libraries I used to build the system. I'm a massive fan of GroundX, an open-source enterprise-grade RAG system you can run on your servers or deploy to any cloud provider. I've been working with them for a long time. GroundX offers two services. First, the "ingest" service uses a custom, pretrained vision model to ingest and understand your data. I used this to process all the documentation I have for my code. Markdown files, source code, HTML files, and even PDF documents. Everything I've written related to my project went into GroundX. Their second service is "search," which combines text and vector search with a fine-tuned re-ranker model to retrieve information from the data. I needed to connect Cursor with this service, and that's where MCP came in. I built an MCP server with two tools: 1. The first tool would go to GroundX and retrieve the available topics. Splitting the data into topics (or "buckets," as GroundX calls them) allows me to use the same setup to serve documentation from different topics. 2. The second tool would search GroundX under a specific topic for the context related to the supplied query. The magic happens after connecting the MCP server with Cursor. Now, I can ask any questions related to my project, and Cursor's AI agent retrieves the list of available topics from the RAG system and then searches it to provide relevant context to the model.
