According to the FIR, the incident took place on September 19 at around 6 pm. The student was heading to coaching when her neighbour, identified as Balveer, approached her on a bike. He allegedly threatened to make photos and videos of her go viral if she did not accompany him. He then took her to a flat in Shruti Apartment, where he sexually assaulted her. After the assault, Balveer threatened to kill her father and uncle if she told anyone about the incident. He later dropped her outside the coaching centre. The frightened girl returned home and narrated the incident to her parents. They then went to the police station and lodged a complaint. Police registered a case against the accused under sections related to rape and the SC/ST Act, and took him into custody.

"I was standing at the monkey enclosure with the phone in my hand," 32-year-old Shahra Bahloul explained. Bahloul was then run into by someone which launched her phone "right through the fences."
