As it should be! Dr. Maya Angelou famously corrected a young woman on a 1990 television show who called her by her first name. She stated, "I'm not Maya. I'm 62 years old. You have no license to come up to me and call me by my first name,"

Funny thing is the girl won’t address her Pastor as Bolaji. It will be Pastor Bolaji.

Hmm, another angle.

Sir, I do tell people... Do whatever you want but don't disrespect me, I won't take it.... Some people think I'm doing too much but I don't care.... How do you even your father's mate by name

You are in order my man. Respect is all most seek for.

You don’t casually address someone by their first name without been close to them Even those abroad know of this simple courtesy

Even on this app, I rarely reply to anyone that calls me “Morris” again it’s mostly from an angle of disrespect. Back in the day when I was anonymous and people thought I was an old man, I did not mind being called Morris because I encouraged it. I wanted people to feel free with me. But now that people know I’m younger, when they say it, it’s with an air of “You this small boy” so I don’t encourage it anymore. Address me well and I will speak to you well.

It’s basic courtesy many lack It takes away nothing to add “Mr.”

That's what they tell them at UBA GT programme ooo, they even emphasize it that you address everyone, including TOE, with their first names....don't blame her

We all did corporate work We know. But common sense. 😀.

Yes you are right. Common sense ensures safety. If it was me, I may have even called his full names, let him reject it first before slamming 'Tony' on him

That's normal at work.

It striking how even some white journalists sometimes address President Trump as “Trump” while some African men feel the need to call a wealthy man “sir” simply because he has money.. even greeting someone with one hand instead of two can be seen as disrespectful

Do they call him Donald?

Even journalists addressed Elon musk the richest man on earth has “Elon” then who goes Tony

And na graduate trainee she be O for odacity😂

He cleared her instantly

Addressing people correctly is a problem especially amongst the so called Gen X. It's Mr Tony Elumelu or Mr Elumelu. Not even TOE. Tony and TOE are for associates, close friends and people of the same age who have called you so over the years. You also should not call me Dr. Mike. Totally wrong. It's Dr. Oberabor. Not Fr. Abaka. Father Oghenejode. These are formal ways of addressing people especially in public settings. Tony na your mate?

I wish I can buy u a drink sir, Straighten her up. Infact her confidence knows that she was about to f** up. The timid look expressed it The modulation in her voice also. If you are in tension between d trends of your profession and your home training, always choose home training. Courtesy/respect in Africa, would trump whatever it is that is d ethics of ur profession. By age gap self, you suppose compose.... Which one be "Tony"? Fear no catch you?

Arh ah ah! She’s actually lucky it’s a formal setting. Even foreigner address executives with their title. It’s just courtesy.

That’s disrespectful, how she has the audacity to say good morning Tony. You won’t understand but it’s basic etiquette.

Worked with the orange bank It’s a first name basis policy Never called any of my Boss’s by their first name

Parents please with everything you have in your body, train your children(male or female) and teach them about respect. Can you imagine this girl without respect😳😳

She’s stupidly audacious. Billionaire businessman status aside. You are African and Nigerian girl. Respect is a huge part of our culture. Addressing your company chairman who is old enough to birth you, by his first name is wild.

When someone walked to Prof Soyinka and demanded his seat from him, you'all called it boldness. Now the young lady is wrong for addressing him as Tony. You guys are all confused lot.

I love the way he put it to her immediately. This is the rubbish culture they pick up from watching too many Western movies. We have our own culture and she would never call her pastor or Rev. Father by his first name.

Last year October, a girl that supposed work for me came from UNILAG and when she got to the Hall, I heard her asking for “Habeeb”. Someone pointed me to her, she came, I denied her for her disrespectfullness. The fact that you here to work for me, you'll respect me. Mr Habeeb at least! Other girls were like, she's at fault, I didn't give her audience because I told her I'm not the one she's looking for with serious face, she tried my number, I already blocked her( because I read her thought). This is discipline. Not wickedness! I'm tough on indisciplined children. As a teacher during NYSC, my students knows me for that. You must be disciplined because that's the bridge between goals and accomplishments. Company policy or no company policy. Respect!

Corporate culture will teach you informality; good breeding will teach you respect. Don't confuse the two and don't expect everyone to know the difference.

After being corrected, a humble girl would've apologised. Are parents really failing in their parental roles or is the social media we should blame?

Is she mad? A whole TOE 👀 omo these GenZ eehn i don tire for their matter 🤦♀️

He encouraged it years back, that's how small small children started calling their mama mates by first name. Afterall, its office environment. My boss then had to call a lady to order, "You can call the chairman by his first name, but me, you will address me appropriately"...

too much foreign movies would make someone think they’re so exposed but not aware of them building up abnormal behaviors.

African culture is based on honour and respect. No matter how western you are, it should never erode your underlying values. Simple Mr Elumelu or Mr Tony would have save the day. Which one be Tony?

She thinks it's normal as they are in corporate setting. But there are limitations to these things. Someone you want to ask question deserve some respect.

@Unfilteredxrp8 come and see o. I think you did a post earlier today about respect.

It’s even irritating the way she sounds it. Very bad attitude. She just tried to test the waters, which was why she coughed. She messed up big time😭

Toyin😂

The fact the she was respectfully given a second chance to correct herself but she failed to take it

“I don’t subscribe to that kind of oyibo life” 😂😂😂

HAH!!! See as I open mouth. This one na iṣẹ ilé she carry come outside. Them no train this one for house.

Tbh he’s right

Let me reveal what happened early this year when my company had openings for factory workers. My company Manager's office is just next room from mine, he conducted the interviews, so I listened attentively while he engaged each of the applicants. I can tell you clearly that home training has literally disappeared in our society. Many Gen Z failed to realize that character- cultural awareness and intelligence are major core values you must cultivate to navigate this world. Cultural Reverences adherence has opened many doors, softened hearts and changed many perception about me in rooms where I literally stood no chance. These intangible assets are unique to our society, we're Nigerians, bastardizing our uniqueness just to blend in western culture is worthless.

Very untrained brat

Calling someone by his first name or last name is never a crime but if we are in Nigeria, then we know we are cultured people. If she is in abroad, she can call him by his name but the moment she is aware of her environment then she need wisdom.
