I’ve already shared my own thoughts on the situation, but I wanted to highlight her explanation because, in my opinion, it perfectly illustrates why I believe many activists and public figures apply different standards depending on who they’re talking about. Take a listen. Key Takeaways from Tamika Mallory: • She said she didn’t initially see the criticism because she has been busy organizing activism efforts, events, and work in Washington, D.C. According to her, her son eventually brought the online criticism to her attention after people began saying she wouldn’t speak on the issue because it involved Jay-Z. • She stated that no one can silence or muzzle her and that she has never had relationships requiring her to stay quiet in exchange for support. She said people at Roc Nation, including executives like Desiree Perez, know she speaks her mind and has never been afraid to disagree with them. • She explained that Jay-Z’s relationship with Target was already established long before the boycott began. More importantly, why does that same grace not extend to everyday people? What about elderly individuals whose closest store is Target? Parents with young children who rely on the nearest Target for medicine, diapers, groceries, or other necessities? Many people were criticized simply for shopping there out of convenience or necessity. Why is Jay Z’s longstanding corporate relationship viewed as an acceptable exception, while ordinary people trying to care for their families were often judged more harshly? Toward the end of the discussion, Tamika said she wished wealthy people had voluntarily chosen not to continue doing business with Target during the boycott. But after spending much of the conversation explaining why his existing relationship made the situation different, that statement felt contradictory to me. What I find most interesting is that Tamika says she was so busy organizing and doing activism work that she didn’t initially see the criticism. Yet, when it comes to other people exercising their own freedom of speech, freedom of expression, or making decisions she disagrees with, she always seems to find the time to weigh in, criticize, and even chastise them. Parents with young children who rely on the nearest Target for medicine, diapers, groceries, or other necessities? Many people were criticized simply for shopping there out of convenience or necessity. Why is Jay Z’s longstanding corporate relationship viewed as an acceptable exception, while ordinary people trying to care for their families were often judged more harshly? Toward the end of the discussion, Tamika said she wished wealthy people had voluntarily chosen not to continue doing business with Target during the boycott. But after spending much of the conversation explaining why his existing relationship made the situation different, that statement felt contradictory to me. The problem with various societies is that they assume because you were a brilliant swimmer, you are going to be a brilliant President of the International Olympic Committee. Just like a journalist, you can be a brilliant journalist, but it does not mean you are going to be a brilliant media owner. You can be a disastrous media owner and yet be a brilliant journalist because the two roles require completely different skill sets. Kirsty Coventry was good in the swimming pool. She is an incompetent manager. She is an incompetent administrator. This is self-evident from the disaster she left in Zimbabwe. She presided over the Sports Ministry for one and a half terms from 2018 to 2025, during which Zimbabwe could not play football inside Zimbabwe. Up to now, Zimbabwe’s home games are played in South Africa, sometimes in Rwanda. It is embarrassing, and it happened under her watch. She is simply incompetent. The failure, even at a small level like Zimbabwe, to ensure that stadiums in our country are functional, and to go to Cabinet and fight for those stadiums to be fixed, simply shows how incompetent she is. She was a brilliant swimmer, we cannot take that away from her, but she has been a disastrous manager. The tragedy is that many people are mesmerised by her past as a swimmer and then conflate that with the new roles she has taken up after her swimming career. Zimbabwe’s inability to host international football matches on home soil during her tenure was not a minor administrative detail. It was a national embarrassment that reflected weak leadership, poor coordination, and a failure to prioritise basic sporting infrastructure. Sporting excellence in the pool does not automatically translate into administrative competence in government or the international stage. The two require completely different skill sets, strategic planning, political negotiation, budgetary discipline, and institutional management. Being exceptional in one field does not guarantee effectiveness in another, and that distinction is precisely what many people refuse to make.

Yesterday was a huge day 🎉 Our youngest baby boy Liam got discharged home from the cardiac acute care unit after 3 months since birth. Some of you know he has HLHS and needed Norwood surgery & been on a slow recovery path It’s been a roller coaster of emotions for my wife and I. At first it was fear and shock … which slowly turned into surrender and then courage and hope In fact my mom gave me a beautiful piece of perspective to knock me off my victim mentality. She said: “out of the 8 billion + people in this world, Liam chose you to be dad and our family as his. Because he knows we got his back. Because we will do our best to support and love him, now show him your best self” I needed it to hear that at one of my low points last month But more than anything it’s been INCREDIBLE to witness how many kind humans stepped up to help and support in this journey Our families, our friends, my co workers at Paddle who have all been super understanding and caring And of course the hospital staff who kept our spirits high every single day .. including surprising us with this sweet gesture ❤️ (watch till the end) Liam has touched so many lives already and has given me a whole new perspective on courage & living life to the fullest — no matter what PS: A friend of ours made him a cute graduation cap 🎓 so he could come home in style
