Sarah: I’m Sarah, and this is my daughter Audrey. We live outside of Columbus, Ohio, in Rep. Mike Carey’s 15th Congressional District. Audrey is 13 years old, and she is so loved in our family. We are incredibly lucky to have her. She’s compassionate, loving, and an amazing friend. Audrey has an active life—she dances, rides horses, and plays baseball. Audrey also has Pura syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. She has intellectual disabilities, seizures, mobility issues, cerebral palsy, and she’s nonverbal—but very expressive. Medicaid provides so much in our lives: her G-tube supplies, her wheelchair, her speech device. It also provides a caregiver for Audrey so that her father and I can work outside the home. In the past, medically complex and intellectually disabled kids like Audrey were institutionalized. They didn’t live at home. They didn’t attend school, where they could socialize and learn life skills. They weren’t part of their communities… When Audrey grows up, she’ll need Medicaid too.
