Truth be told 💯 👌 I admire women who explain society dynamics into simple and easy to understand terms. Especially things that most people dont like to hear 😁😁

not just financially strained communities I think any members of marginalized communities tend to value respect quite a lot because as Min Jin said when you have nothing else going on for you you’re prone to be humiliated and keeping your dignity becomes very important.

Fascinating. I grew up a poorer immigrant but somehow I escaped most of that need for external respect. Even as a first gen immigrant I somehow got a critical dose of self esteem, that I believe came from my parents, at a very young age before we emigrated from Korea. That esteem gives me such power. How do we teach our young people this esteem? I'm privileged though to be upwardly mobile in my life. I really won the lotto of life.

So I agree with everything she just said…but I’m surprised with myself for not having been able to articulate that myself…it also makes me view a few online peeps (that make videos) differently and with a little more empathy 💜

People from middle class or above learn to feel embarrassed for whoever tried to disrespect them

the way she goes quiet mid sentence and looks up like shes actually processing it for the first time hits different when youve been the kid who never got to finish that thought

Deep. We often see people inclining towards things which were perceived as "out of reach" in our childhood. Ex: I have noticed this habit of people buying trendy, flashy clothes which does not suit their current reality. Psychology probably has this as filling the void.

Respect is a core human need. It probably comes from self defence. The need to feel secure.

I also feel the need to always dress well everywhere I go as a black person in an European country and after listening to her, I understand that and is kinda sad. Even during my internship after college while working with kids I used to be so conscious about that…

Having been raised in narco territory as a kid I can say she’s 100% right, respect is the ultimate currency in those environments and everyone’s flexing what they got to prove ‘they made it’

decontextualizing materialism. she said that so easily hahaha

I'd never considered that maybe that's why birkin, van cleef, etc exist

She almost makes being a status obsessed victim sound like a noble vocation

I love lee min jin one of my fave authors and honestly kind of wish she were my older sis loll ! She speaks so eloquently and captures so much in one simple sentence. (Also she was there for one of the infamous bts pics in NYC and loves them too 💜)

Honor and shame culture. All about face and respect.

MOTHER!!!!!!!! 🗣️

She makes a good point, but I think that in her case, as well as most cases in the hood.. the perceived disrespect is in their head.. driven by paranoia. Most people see Asians as industrious and successful.. people are not commonly assuming she’s poor.

Nailed it. .

This healed something in me

I love this i talked about it in my podcast, how my parents being disrespected did a number to me

Tied to respect is dignity. Lacking respect for someone, is also indicative of lack of the dignity for the person who is being mistreated.

She's so clever and grounded

Really good insight but assumptive that this is a modern phenomenon. Rather, it appears in all ages, all cultures: think of Joseph and the coat of many colors; think of eagle feathers and predator teeth and animal furs as adornments/signs of superiority; being fat was status, long fingernails, expensive jewelry, ad nauseum.

It is worth remembering that Alexander Hamilton was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr because he called the latter a 'scoundrel'. Honor culture explains a lot.

Dress, status markers! Problem with lot of Eastern citizens is looking-up to west for recognition. Dressing western, speaking English-There is a fear that 1 will not be respected. Cannot win the game with rules set by others. Can be solved with pride about 1self, country, society

she's spot on about the respect bit but being treated "differently" because of the way you present yourself isn't different for anyone else you either rise above of these things and just not care about them or you don't although truly rising above that is... *veeery* rare

This excerpt helped me understand why I see some people who drive around in beat up luxury cars instead of purchasing a nice reliable non-luxury vehicle. Maybe it’s their way of looking for respect.

She’s brilliant. 100% true

I’ve never looked at it that way before

@Bongi_B This empathy and non judgement… real wisdom 🤌🏻 what a queen!

I feel disrespectful that I don’t know her or of her!!! I love her articulation! She’s HIT THE MARK! 😭🙆🏽♂️👏🏽🔥🥹

That's why ama Korean a nje! Makes sense.

Asian Americans come from civilisations that are older than America. How then do they always look at themselves through the white man's eye?

The thing about respect is it's not a poor people thing. Every one of every social class value respect, even those who have had everything.
