What happened in Jamui, Bihar is enough to make anyone furious. Those men picked a girl up and tried to carry her away from her friend. Watching that video, it was painfully clear what they were trying to do. But what made me even angrier were the reactions on social media. Instead of asking why those men did it, people started asking: Why was she out at night? Why was she with a boy? What was she wearing? A woman being outside at night, with a male friend, or wearing clothes you do not approve of is NOT an invitation to rape. And she wasn’t even wearing any revealing clothes. She can wear whatever she wants. The men who attacked her are guilty. And people who instinctively blame the woman instead of the attackers are defending the very mindset that enables sexual violence.

She wouldn’t have a platform, she’d be told to cover up, and she’d be ordered to shut her mouth.
