All the poors in the comments that never been a boat have no idea this is 100% legal and happens everywhere on the water. They do a check for your safety equipment then they give you a paper saying you’ve already been boarded this year. If they got boarded again they can just show the piece of paper and they’d get off the boat.

We need to get back to probable cause only and not "papers please" here. I works like that in most everything else except on boats.

Only thing I disagreed with was "You have a lot of people, that usually means charter". Not at all. I chartered a kayak fishing trip and it was just me in my kayak and the guide in his. And I've had a girl scout troop and their parents in my boat and there were like 25 people. That being said the law needs no reason ever to board your boat.

They can board , and check for life jackets and registration, make sure your fire extinguishers are current. All minors have jackets on.

Imagine being the Coast Guard, whose job it is to patrol the waters and enforce the law, meanwhile being there in case of a problem….like an overloaded boat without any safety equipment and an unqualified captain who they have to risk life and limb to rescue when the feces hits the rotary bladed device. Wouldn’t you like to be able to prevent things like that from happening? They are doing their job.

I get that the Coast Guard doesn't need probable cause, most likely, but we went from the 4th amendment straight to "well, you look like you may be doing something, so we're taking over your property for as long as we want" real quick.

Coast Guard exercises a combination of police and military authority. They only have boarding rights on waters with a 2 mile distance across. A few summers ago they harassed salmon fishermen all day every day with their “safety checks”. They could easily be more effective at the dock having an educational stance. When we called the headquarters it was explained they were training. Congress needs to real them in and protect our 4th amendment rights. Reasonable suspicion or probable cause, fine. Otherwise stay off my boat.

Looking at the comments it’s like there’s a whole segment of the population who knows absolutely nothing about boating. Coast Guard safety inspections are a thing. A VERY GOOD THING. Nearly every news report of a boating death contains some variant of ‘the victim was not wearing a life jacket’. If you don’t take the water seriously, not only could you die, but others then have to risk their lives trying to recover your body… which may never be recovered. Your family might never get the closure of burying you. So, to everyone on this thread pushing back on this… sit down, STFU, and use that floatation device.
