For those wondering 🚨 In December 2013, Alyssa Jo Lommel, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Minnesota Duluth, suffered severe frostbite leading to the amputation of all her fingers and toes. After a night of drinking with friends, she was dropped off at her home around midnight but did not make it inside. She was found the next morning on her neighbor's porch after spending approximately nine hours outside in temperatures as low as -17°F (-27°C). Lommel was hospitalized with severe hypothermia and underwent multiple surgeries to amputate her frostbitten extremities Following her recovery, she returned to campus life and has since advocated for awareness about the dangers of alcohol consumption and exposure to extreme cold. FYI, I focus on adding context to social media posts that often lack it. If you're interested in seeing posts with added clarity and background, consider following me.

When it’s extremely cold, ourbody shunts blood away from your hands, feet, nose, and ears to protect your brain and core organs. That’s why fingers and toes freeze first. In places like Alaska, Siberia and parts of the Himalayas, frostbite related amputations are a real risk for climbers, military personnel, and residents during harsh winters. Treatment : In some rare cases, doctors have used leeches to restore blood flow to frostbitten areas because leech saliva contains anti-coagulants and vasodilators.

This is caused by severe frostbite leading to tissue necrosis and gangrene. Frostbite occurs when skin and underlying tissues freeze, typically in extremities like fingers, toes, nose, or ears due to poor blood circulation in cold environments. Ice crystals form inside cells, damaging cellular structures and blood vessels. Prolonged exposure can result in irreversible tissue death (necrosis), and if circulation isn't restored quickly, gangrene can set in - a dangerous condition where the dead tissue becomes infected. In such cases, to prevent the spread of infection and systemic complications like sepsis, surgical amputation of the affected digits is necessary.

This girl was really lucky that she survived after this extremely dangerous situation. Thanks to the people who discovered her in time, otherwise she would hardly have survived. This is also a warning to those who drink too much.

reminds me of a story of a woman who tried to get to her house from her car parked in driveway during a blizzard. Somehow she missed the house and couldnt find a way back. Yeah she died.
