I have taught school for almost 30 years. I used to do a roll call name list at the beginning of every school year. Sometimes, I would mispronounce a student’s name. I always welcomed the correction. About six years into my career, I flipped the script and and allowed my students to introduce themselves. I would make careful notes phonetically spelling their names if I made a mistake. I always believe in maintaining the dignity of the student and take the time to correctly pronounce the name OR make note of a preferred name. There is no excuse not to learn someone’s name.
