She volunteered. First Lieutenant Ashley White graduated from Kent State University and accepted her commission as a Medical Service Corps Officer in the United States Army. She loved the camaraderie. She loved belonging to something bigger than herself. That is what her mother remembered most. In 2010, the Army... created Cultural Support Teams to work alongside Special Operations units in Afghanistan. At the time, women were officially banned from combat roles. But they could be attached in support positions. Ashley raised her hand. She joined the 230th Brigade Support Battalion and volunteered for a Cultural Support Team attached to a Joint Special Operations Task Force. She became part of the first group of women to enter combat under that mission. These teams were tasked with engaging local Afghan women and families, building trust where male soldiers could not. It was dangerous work. In October 2011, while supporting an assault force in Afghanistan, an improvised expl*sive device detonated. Ashley was k*lled in action. She was 24 years old. She became the first member of a Cultural Support Team to d** in combat. Her loss carried weight beyond her unit. She was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Combat Action Badge. But medals do not tell the full story. They do not capture the quiet courage of volunteering when you did not have to. They do not show the humility her mother described.
