In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Among the signs of the approach of the Hour, as foretold by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), is the acceleration of time. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Hour will not come until time contracts..." (Narrated by Al-Bukhari in his Sahih). Scholars have differed in their interpretation of the meaning of the contraction of time. Some of its meanings include: * That days and years pass quickly, until one feels that a week is like a day, a month like a week, and a year like moments. * That time loses its blessing, so one lives for long hours but accomplishes little. This is what many people experience today, to the point that we say, "How quickly the days pass!" This is merely a reminder of the nearness of our meeting with God, and not an assertion of the Hour's arrival, for its time is known only to God. God Almighty says: "The Hour has drawn near to mankind, while they are heedless and turning away." (Al-Anbiya: 1) And He says: "The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split." (Al-Qamar: 1) If the days pass in the blink of an eye, then the wise person is the one who seizes what remains of their life before it is said, "So-and-so was with us yesterday, and today he is under the earth." Seize your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your free time before you become preoccupied, and your life before your death. Increase your prayers, your kindness to your parents, your recitation of the Quran, your charity, and your seeking forgiveness, for life is short, and what has passed will not return. O God, grant us a good end, make the best of our deeds their conclusion, and the best of our days the day we meet You. Do not let this world be our sole preoccupation, and forgive us, our parents, and all Muslims. Amen.
