Lending his celebrity to the political machinery responsible for Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine is disgraceful. Hockey records do not excuse it. Your organization condemned Russia’s invasion in 2022. Where is that conviction now? What credibility does that condemnation have if you remain silent when your captain helps promote the very leadership responsible? Ovechkin is accountable for his political choices. The Capitals are accountable for how they respond to them. His talent and commercial value should not place him beyond criticism or accountability. Publicly address his participation. Condemn his promotion of the Kremlin’s ruling party. Explain what standards you expect from the person wearing your captain’s “C.” Principles mean little if they disappear when your biggest star puts them to the test.
