In The Shining (1980), Stanley Kubrick made Shelley Duvall cry on camera for 12 hours a day for 9 months straight. Kubrick's daughter, , documented the shoot, capturing Stanley Kubrick telling the crew, "Don't sympathize with Shelley. It doesn't help you." Anjelica Huston, who was Jack Nicholson’s partner at the time, later said it felt like Kubrick and Nicholson were “ganging up” on her. The film still holds the Guinness World Record for the most retakes of a dialogue scene. Wendy's baseball bat confrontation was filmed 127 times, leaving Duvall's hands raw from gripping the bat. The prolonged stress caused her hair to fall out, and she was in and out of physical illness for half a year. At that time, Herzog found Kubrick being very concerned that the sound of Danny’s trike going over the hardwood floors & the carpet back & forth didn't sound good.
