Here are the main reasons why I believe the large flood event described in the Bible occurred 5,000–6,000 years ago: Sediments showing major flood deposits have been found in ancient Mesopotamian cities such as Ur, Shuruppak, and Kish. There was also a Y-chromosome bottleneck in which 19 out of 20 male lineages went extinct (literally a "Noah's Flood" scenario in which only one male lineage and a few female lineages were passed on). In addition, there was an abrupt climate change event and the desertification of the Sahara, during which the once-green region turned into a vast desert. All of this happened during the same period, around the time of the 5.9 kiloyear event and the Solovki Geomagnetic Excursion. This evidence points to the flood traditions preserved in the stories of Noah, Gilgamesh, and Atrahasis from the Levant and Mesopotamia, as well as the Flood of Manu in India and the Greek flood of Deucalion.

Many people think that the ancient Egyptians did not have a story about a great flood, but they did! In the chapter “The Destruction of Mankind” from the Book of the Heavenly Cow, Ra sends the Red Flood to prevent total annihilation after sending Sekhmet to punish humanity. This represents the final stage of the Geophysical Event, after which everything stabilizes, so the flood comes at the end of the story. Plato, who learned this from the Egyptians, also wrote that the Greeks were like children because they knew of only one flood story, that of Deucalion. He also explained that mankind is cyclically destroyed by floods and then repopulated by shepherds and people dwelling in the high mountains.

In the earliest Mesopotamian creation accounts, after the departure of the Anunnaki and in the aftermath of the Great Flood, a different group enters the story. The Apkallu, led by Oannes, are said to emerge from the waters of the Persian Gulf and begin teaching humanity the foundations of civilization including writing, agriculture, law, architecture, and sacred knowledge. This was at a moment when human society was super fragile and only beginning again. This raises a set of unresolved questions that the texts themselves never fully answer. Were the Apkallu NHI associated with the deep, possessing an unusual empathy for early humanity? Were they human survivors of a far more advanced pre flood culture, passing on retained knowledge to a diminished population? Or do these accounts describe something else entirely, an interaction that does not fit into modern categories of myth, history, or even speculation? What do you think?
