His back legs weren't what they used to be, and the boys had to help him down onto the sand. For a second he just stood there at the top of the beach, nose up, taking in all that salt air and open water like he couldn't quite believe it. Then something in him shifted. He started down toward the surf on his own, stiff and determined, the way he used to trot to the door when the kids came home from school. When the first cold wave washed over his paws, his whole face lit up. He didn't run, he couldn't, but he waded in up to his chest and stood in the shallow water with the sun going down behind him, and the whole family just watched. Nobody said much. They didn't need to. They stayed until the light was almost gone, taking pictures, letting Baxter rest against their legs, giving him one perfect afternoon to hold onto. He came to Animal Shelter on his lunch break because his daughter had been asking him for months to at least go and look. He told himself he was just browsing. Just getting it out of the way so he could honestly tell her he had tried. Glen spent about twenty minutes in one of the meet rooms with a three-year-old brown mixed breed named Hector. Hector had been at Animal Shelter for seven months. He had been returned to the shelter twice. The notes in his file said he was too attached. Followed people too closely. Didn't do well with being lett alone. Glen sat on the floor with Hector. Let the dog climb into his lap. Scratched his ears. It was pleasant. Normal. The kind of interaction Glen figured would happen. Then Glen stood up to leave. Hector went straight up with him. Not barking. Not jumping in the usual sense. He climbed. Both front legs wrapped around Glen's midsection. Face pressed hard into Glen's chest. Completely quiet. Just holding on. Glen stumbled back a half step. Looked down. Hector looked up at him. He still drops by Ithumba periodically to visit Benjamin and the team. In the Samburu dialect, Tomboi means ‘boy without a father.’ It was a fitting name for the tiny orphan we rescued all those years ago. No matter how big he grows or how much time passes, Tomboi will always have his SWT family standing behind him.
