On 1 January 2026, Julian Pereira, a Brazilian asylum seeker left what appeared to be a bomb outside the front door of MI5’s headquarters in Vauxhall, London. The CCTV camera operator saw it and police were called away from a major event to deal with it. Pereira was arrested at his asylum hotel in Uxbridge and has been at the magistrate’s court this week but the judge has referred it to the Old Bailey, as the maximum sentence he could have set was 12 months. What is truly astonishing about this case is how long it takes the system to deal with a rejected asylum claim. Pereira came to the UK to work in July 2018. From February 2019 he was in the country illegally. 7 years later, in 2026, he is still in the UK and for 5 years of that time he was housed in taxpayer funded accommodation. This asylum claim was rejected in 2023 and his appeal rejected in December 2025. What is going on with asylum claims/processing that it takes 5 years and even then they are not deported?

🇬🇧🔴A U.K. jury was shown this CCTV footage on Tuesday during the trial of Deng Majek, a Sudanese asylum seeker accused of stalking and murdering 27-year-old Rhiannon Whyte, who worked behind the bar at the asylum hotel he was staying in. The jury was told the footage showed Majek staring at Rhiannon while she worked at the Park Inn Hotel, Walsall, on Oct. 20 last year, before following her through a car park after her shift. Eight minutes later, the prosecution said Majek could be seen walking from the scene of the crime across a railway bridge, before throwing Rhiannon's phone into the river. He then went to the shop to buy a drink before returning to his accommodation, the court heard. "Once at the hotel, he was seen dancing and laughing, clearly excited about what he had done," the prosecution claimed. Rhiannon was stabbed 23 times, including 11 blows that penetrated her skull, with other wounds to her chest and defensive markings on her arm. She had called a friend moments before her death, who heard her screams before the line went dead. The prosecution claimed the murder weapon was likely a screwdriver, which has not been found.

Hearing mother and grandmother Siobhan Whyte speak this morning was a gut-punch. She said I was one of the only politicians who actually listened. No family should ever have to fight this hard just to be heard. And I’m afraid Siobhan is right — what happened to her daughter, Rhiannon Skye Whyte, will happen again in Britain. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.

REPORT: People in the UK and Ireland have now reached their boiling point after an attempted beheading in Belfast was linked to a Sudanese asylum seeker. The victim suffered “significant injuries” to his face, neck, and back before brave bystanders rushed in and stopped the attack. The suspect, a man in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said the suspect is believed to have traveled from Sudan to Paris, and then from Paris to Dublin, on unknown dates, before taking a bus to Belfast in February 2023. He immediately claimed asylum and was granted leave to remain in the UK in September 2023, Mr Boutcher said.
